Prepare a Medicine Cabinet
and gather the supplies needed to take care of a sick frog

Gathering these supplies needs to be done PRIOR to having a sick frog.
Know where and how to contact a qualified Herp Vet PRIOR to having a sick frog.

Sick frogs need special care specific to the species being treated.
An initial and basic set-----up should be prepared in advance and kept on hand at all times.

All medications reviewed in this ‘preparation’ of supplies , in most cases, need the guidance and supervision of a qualified herp vet.

Below is a description of my supplies , kept on hand at all times for red eyed tree frogs ( A callidryas) and black eyed tree frogs ( A moreletii ). All supplies need the common sense modification for smaller and larger species.

Shopping list:
-Distilled water


-De-chlorinated water– Aquatize shown here

Exo Terra : Aquatize / Terrarium Water Conditioner
-Q-tips
-Unflavored pedialyte

( pedi soaks ----- 1:10 --- ( one part pedi to 10 part distilled water)
For example ----- one teaspoon pedi and 10 teaspoons distilled water
A vet may recommend a different soaking solution ?

-Honey
Honey soak instructions here:

-Bleach – for sterilizing ( ie Clorox used for laundry)
Rinse ! Rinse! Rinse!
Anything that has been cleaned in bleach solution should be rinsed in de-chlorinated water
-Un- bleached paper towels (white are ok in a pinch- no printed pattern)
-Powder free -- vinyl gloves - latex gloves should not be used
-Other random supplies


-A soaking container with a lid for soaking /re-hydration/ treatments: (link to instructions below)
A lid is necessary so the frog cannot escape during the time in which you want them to remain in the treatment solution. You can sit there with your hand over the top! However, this just adds to additional stress on the frog. I place the covered soaking/treatment container back into the quarantine enclosure during the soak so the frog can be kept at the proper temperature and left in a quiet spot. My container (instructions below) is just the right height so the tree frog HAS to keep its body in the solution. The liquid should not be above the tree frog’s chin.

The quarantine enclosure:
10 gallon glass pictured here:


-vertically oriented (appreciated by a tree frog - but not necessary)

Supplies for the above quarantine enclosure:
-a soaking dish
(see additional instruction ---link above)
-a simple plant or clipping (pictured here is a pothos maintained just for quarantine)
-a screen lid / this lid has glass covering all but 4 inches of the screen
-a lid/screen lock
-cover three sides of the enclosure with a dark paper (not shown)
-(you could paint it--on the outside--with Martha Stewart all purpose paint ( found at a craft store)
-or simply cover it with a towel- shown here
-continue to maintain proper temp and humidity
-substrate- very damp paper towel /de-chlorinated water/ changed three times a week – when the frog is sleeping. Get all supplies ready ahead of time. Get in and out as quickly as possible. USE GLOVES
Wash your hands before and after handing your frogs!
Don’t even think about using those gloves again

A Frog Forum search will proved an enormous amount of additional information regarding a variety of quarantine set ups

All quarantine supplies ( including the tank) should be initially sterilized, sterilized after the quarantine tank is used and prior to repeat use. A very diluted bleach solution should be used for this and RINSED – thoroughly-(in de-chlorinated water ) to remove any remnants of the bleach solution.

Below are photos of my- recently refilled - tree frog medications prescribed by Dr Frye. The directions given to me, are specific for my ( size) tree frogs- these are prescribed by the frog's weight in grams. Therefore, before contacting Dr Frye via email – weigh your frog as this will save time.

I use the tiny green spatula – ( I do not like to use a credit card as it can scratch the delicate tissue around their mouth- I think this is a cupcake decorator)

Alternate force feeding method.
You can also force feed a tree frog during a shed:
Get the feeder ready , stand there- in the dark and wait ! ( YES - wait for hours night after night ) Wait for the frog to open wide ----and drop the feeder in. Down the hatch !!! Works like a charm ! Be ready to protect your frog , as this sometimes startles them, and they might take an uncontrolled leap which increases the risk on an injury.

This is the only product listed here I personally keep on hand. I dip crickets into this prior to force feeding. I typically use my “drop in the mouth method” whenever possible as it is less stressful on the frog.

I always kept those stackable bead containers from craft stores in mine as well to use as fecal jars. They're brilliant and the vets love them, as you can write the name of each animal on the side with a sharpie, and they're cheap! We keep a few extras in our first aid box, but we have more reptiles than amphibians (I'm working on that...), so certain things that wouldn't be used with frogs we've used with them (like KY Jelly, don't laugh... it's a water based lubricant that is great when a snake has a bed shed!)

We need to be prepared !
We are trying very hard to get this message of being prepared ( ahead of time ) across to members.
It's only a matter of time - as to when a frog will need this kind of medically guided support !
I will probably make this a sticky ?

The ky is probably good for a frog's intestinal prolapse as well.
I sometimes worry about a honey/soaks for a frog prolapse?
??? honey in the outer intestinal lining??? don't know if that's such a good idea... my gut tells me .... not a good idea
It's the warm soaks and a few days of no food that works just fine.

I worry about oil base neosporin as well getting in their eyes.
I decided not to mention anything about the neo. I would not use it.
I keep the SSD on hand ( at all times ) for any broken frog skin....of which needs to used immediately or real trouble starts

The bead containers ARE great. I use them for water throughout the dart tanks; easily hid by leaf litter!

I've never used the honey treatment as I've never had to (knock on wood), so can't give my two cents on that unfortunately. As far as the Neosporin, I was always taught not to buy any with the pain reliever in it as it could have harmful effects on the reptiles, as far as with amphibians I don't know.

This is what's included in my kit, it was compiled based on Melissa Kaplan's recommendations on Anapsid.org:

A question about administering the Panacur, if I may?

Do you simply dust the feeders with it or is there another method recommended? Also, how often? (I ask because I have several places where one can buy Panacur without visiting a vet and it's generally much cheaper, but I don't want to unknowingly under/over dose my frogs.)

Of course you may.
It's very tempting to do this. I understand that this can get very expensive.

Panacur-C is available ( ? 2 and 4 mg packets)
I have NO idea what Dr. Frye prescribes . Yes, you are right--- it could be very dangerous to under-treat!
There are several different parasitic infections a frog could have, as well. Especially if wild caught.

We read that panacur is safe? However, Panacur should not be used unless the frog has parasites.
To detect parasites the stool needs to be , microscopically, studied.
1- to detect the parasite
2- to determine which parasite it is
3- once determined - the proper dose and length of treatment can be prescribed, sometimes w/ an additional medication

My intention in creating this thread is to encouraged those of us who have frogs to be prepared.
Part of the preparation is to have have these medicines on hand.
Then, Dr Frye is just and email away!

Personally, my solution for fecal tests has been: I found a local vet that will do a fecal w/out my hauling in 9 tree frogs !
I have 4 in one tank and 5 in another. If one has signs and symptoms of could be a parasitic infection--I bring that frog's fecal.
Typically the hole tank is treated. I have brought in a what I thought was an infected fecal which turned out to be negative- twice ! Turned out the frog needed 14 days of metronidizole. So, If I had given the frog Panacur , what might have happened?

So, what I am saying is. I understand these medications very well. This is the reason, I would never take the liberty to suggest a dose of a prescription medication for a member's frog ( being left with the responsibility of the outcome- I would feel terrible if something happened !) I respect the fact that I am not a vet. Post #1 has a review of what you get from Dr Frye based on the kind of frog you keep. Once the investment is made, he is really happy to help ! This is not a wast of money in any way shape or form. We WILL ALL likely need it at some point. Our frogs sit in an enclosed, human monitored, human maintained, environment with lots of potential 'bugs' we are responsible for trying to avoid. Even with the very best intended care, sometimes things are unavoidable.
