    Default Toads watch me

I have a quarantined tank by my bed with two young female American Toads and they have a lot of places to go in the tank but for some reason they have taken turns sitting at the corner of the tank where they can see me. I think it's funny but I've also never seen Toads watch me as I slept and as I was in my room. I've only had them a month lol
Does anyone have any crazy toad stories?

I didn't have that with toads, but I did have something similar with my Leopard geckos when I still owned animals, whenever I came into the room they all became active and wandered out of their hide to find me, probably because they associated me with food by that point

Mine stare at me, my tv, and my Godzilla figure nearby the tank, as well as any food nearby. They also try to eat my fingers. Mine are woodhouse's, much like American Toads.

That's interesting about a Leopard Gecko...it sounds like the animals know who feeds them and they associate us with food. It's like we are conditioning them. These two young Toads are very interesting because I haven't had them for more than a month and late at night and during the day they are facing me and it funny but kinda creepy lol

Ha, it makes sense as the largest moving thing/food provider you'd be interesting as both threat and food source. Frogs are certainly good at staring.

I now have a toad story myself. During a heavy downpour, a toad showed up outside the sliding glass door. I bent down to get a closer look and it charged into the door as if it was trying to get out of the rain.

Mine started exhibiting a new behavior only recently, I enjoyed it so much I took a video. They lash out at each other for eating food they wanted, especially in succession.

I can't tell, but they look like either Woodhouse's toads or Western toads, based on the back stripe

I'm roughly 90% sure on species, pretty sure they are woodhouse's toads. I caught them in Las Vegas. They're voracious little things with a lot of personality!

It's pretty much the same isn't it? I'd been watching that video, but my toads never did that. Then maybe a week ago they did it for superworms, and they've also done it over pinkies since. When I caught them I was at the hotel I was staying at. They roamed the grounds at night, and were very easy to find and catch. Im saving up money to go to Vegas again to catch more for a very large tank build I want to do next year.

That sounds cool! How big will your setup be?
So I took some pictures of the girls and the strangest thing happened. My one toad posed for a photo and after I took the phone away she hopped away.

My setup is going in my Uncle's old fish tank. I don't know the size, but it's 5ish feet long, truvu brand. Used to be used for a giant tropical fish tank, so it'll need some cleaning. It's 5ish feet long, 3-4 feet wide, 2+ feet tall. Feel free to guess the gallon size, I'll leader it eventually. I plan to make a thread on it when I get started on it. I've been reading your threads and decided on a paludarium, complete with a weak filter. Your threads were invaluable reading, by the way. What kind of plants are you using? I saw philodendron or pothos in some pics but couldn't pick any others out.

Hey thank you very much I'm very glad to see that the threads inspired you [emoji4]so a Paludarium that's interesting. If you've seen my threads then I'm assuming you're thinking about doing a Leopard Frog and Toad setup or something with a frog? Right now that enclosure will be big enough for you to have sexed pairs if you go that route. For tropical plants yes pothos is my top suggestion. It's the plant that can never die! Peace lilies and Rabbit Foot Ferns would do great with the Toads. You have the height so a native autumn Fern will also do well in that setup. Mine is over a year old in my enclosure.

I thought about a mixed species vivarium/paludarium, but I mostly just want to have woodhouse's toads in it, maybe some fish in the water, with a filter. I just thought it looked so natural the way you set it up, with a few aquatic plants, logs, and a pond area for them, plus I want them to be able to breed. I figured with my Uncle's tank I can house 6-7 toads, maybe even 8, enough for a few pairs of toads.

I have a YouTube channel and you can see the setups on video to help you get a visual. The bin I had was too big for Toads. They rarely went in it. I think about 3-4 inches would be all that you would need for the toads. If you have that consistently for a stretch of tank then small fish are possible. I would go with Mosquitofish because they are native and imo the hardiest fish. But if you have fish it will mean more work for breeding because amphibians don't like to lay eggs where there are fish
