I want to make a native vivarium for my fowler's toad, or at least have a theme that replicates nature, so I was wondering what kind of environment do you tend to see toads in the most other than in a garden?
I would use a planted vivarium, with deep substrate for burrowing, sturdy plants, a large water bowl, and bark for hiding under.
Do you think that a coco fiber and organic topsoil mix would be a good substrate? I want something that is good for temperate plants. Fowler's toads like sandy soil right? so should I mix in some sand, or would that be an impaction risk?
I mix soil with peat, 2:1. I am by no means a green thumb, but most of my plants (ok, some of my plants) seem to grow well. Overwatering seems to be the bigger issue with my plants.
I have not tried sand. I doubt that a small amount of sand in the mixture would lead to impactation, but I don't think it's necessary for the toads, either.
Thanks! I'll try that with a bit of sand and see how that works. I'm going to see if I can find a way to get grasses to grow in there...
