Hello
I am currently setting up a terrarium for a whites tree frog. And I acquired a half log from a friend and was wondering if certain types of woods could harm my new frog(I don't have him yet). I think the half log is cedar. I baked it at 200 degrees for an hour to kill any mold and it had a perfume like smell to the wood so I thought it was cedar. Anyways any helpful info would rock! Thanks in advance!
Cedar will kill him. So if it is indeed cedar don't use it.
you can use oak, popple, birch, iron wood, maple, and hickory. I know your dissapointment when you find a peice that you like, but it will kill any frog. Also don't use any green wood(still alive) as even oak is toxic when it's green. Best to find down branches, 1/2 rotted, or barkless pieces. You can scrub the rot with a rock and get a nice polished piece out of it.
Well honestly i dont know what kind of wood it is. So here are a few pics.
Hopefully someone can identify it for me
I would also stay away from useing pine.
that kinda looks like cedar but i think its normally a bit more red. Did it smell like cedar?
It smelled similar (the perfume like smell) but not like cedar chips you find at pet stores. Idk what else it could be though.
Its not cedar. It looks like a half log hide you see for sale at pet stores. Its safe, but if it has been used previously, I would bake it in the oven for an hour or so at 200F.
Yea I baked it. And glad to hear it's not cedar. So I can use it?
