Default Another male to the party....

    Hi all,

Just got another male for my breeding group. This is Bubba, from Tampa. About 2-3 years old. 7.5 inches svl. Looks extremely healthy.

    Enjoy.

Right now, I am up to 13 pyxies. 3 babies, 4 adult males, 6 adult females. I think 18 adults would be a good number to have, come spring. Like 8 females and 10 males.

Brumating are 4 of the females and 2 of the males. After this next week, I should have 2 more males and 2 more females burmating.

That sounds awesome Jeff. Will the clouds be the source of your rain? I look forward to seeing how that goes for you. I've got high hopes that you can pull this off.

March seems to be the spring rains, here in Orlando. I will be augmenting the hopeful natural rain with a rain system over the outdoor pool. I will have to sketch up my idea and post it.

What will you do if the males fight? (I know they do it in the wild but what if it gets a little out of hand in a small environment?)

@Kevin, from my understanding, you need to keep the water low for better breeding. Recommendations have been 4cm. Also, any deeper and the males have a high tendancy to drown the females. In the wild, they may swim in the deeper areas, but come to the edges to breed. I feel that the water temperature will be important too.

@Will, yep, pictures, pictures, pictures! I will try to get a video camera too. The rain system is a 1000 gph pump into a pvc rig with spray heads used in the hydroponic industry. Should give good rain simulation. I will run the pump for several hours each day or even over night. Yes, male interaction will be expected. Problematic, possibly. I expect a lot of countless hours of observation. It is important that the males call and interact. Not only for the males, but for the females. Something about the calling and fighting helps the final development of the eggs in the females. I am hoping that the hides, grass divides and raised areas will visually separate males when they need time apart.

Hopefully, as the eggs are laid, I will gather them up and move them to several other kiddy pools for grow out. All will have conditioned water and some filtration.
