    Default Toad with red leg???

I caught a toad in my pool skimmer about a week ago. she had clear “bubbles” of water under the skin on her legs. They have since popped and now there are some worrying blisters and sores in the area. She also smells bad so there may be sone necrosis. Is it red leg? How can I help her? I’ll try to post pictures of her.

What I’m seeing in the picture could be almost anything. Possibly an injury or a burn that didn’t heal properly, chemical exposure etc. but regardless of the cause this is one sick toad. Be advised though that the term “redleg” does not refer to one specific disease. The term is often erroneously used to describe a single disease but is instead a term used to describe the symptoms resulting from a host of different infections many of which are opportunistic. A proper exam, wound culture and sensitivity would be in order to provide a diagnosis and treatment but given that this is a wild toad I’m assuming that’s impractical. Based on the odor and the description you provided I would definitely say that it is suffering from an advanced infection. wash your hands well and in no way bring this toad into contact with any animals in your collection( should you have one). The animal’s condition looks poor but it does seem to have a decent body weight. If you are dead set on attempting to treat this toad I would quarantine it in a container such as a Rubbermaid container with moist unbleached paper towels and a clean hide such as half a plastic flower pot. You will need to change the paper towels at least daily. Neosporin without pain killer can be administered but I would go by a vets instructions. (A full course of topical antibiotics may not be enough). You can try soaking the toad in a honey solution or an Indian almond leaf solution. Both have antimicrobial properties. Other than that there is not much you can do at this point.

Toad appears better today. The infection/nasty area is a bit bigger but clean, no longer growing, and she doesn’t smell bad anymore. I’m applying antibiotic ointment(no painkillers) to the area daily and changing paper towels/water daily. The toad is still fat and eating and she seems to have normal energy.
