Default repurposing old fish aquarium for toads

    Hi there

Years ago I obtained a 36 gallon long aquarium second hand that I used for several years with African cichlids. The fish have not been in there for several years and the tank has remained derelict in my basement. Is is possible to clean out the old tank to be reused as a terrarium for my toads. If so how would I go about cleaning the tank. I also wanted to know if the gravel could also be cleaned and reused as a drainage layer if I plan on planting plants within the tank

    Thanks

Yes, just make sure the silicone doesn't need to be replaced. As long as you thoroughly rinse the gravel, it should work just fine as a drainage layer. What type of toad do you have, by the way?

Hi there , Should I be using a type of mesh material between the soil and the gravel? I am caring for American toads btw

    Two simple ways:

    1. 10 percent bleach solution ( rinse it out multiple times after cleaning)
    2. White vinegar

obviously do not mix chemicals or use both methods at once. Use appropriate precautions with bleach. The vinegar will get rid of hard water stains and acts as a weak antimicrobial. The 10 percent bleach solution will disinfect. As far as gravel goes i would ditch it. LECA clay balls act better as false bottom or drainage layer and they are much lighter than gravel.
