    Default I'm done using Earthworms

I got a call from the vet that my toad who was being dewormed got a parasitic nematode from eating earthworms. The good thing is that she's got more dewormer and the vet wants to use it and my other toads will be dewormed but I am just tired of having this happen. I tried Walmart, Petco and a Baitshop who had supposed better conditions then the other two.

I will not tell people they can't use them but I will no longer recommend them to people. I plan on making part 2 for an American Toad Care Sheet and I'll have to mention this. It's a $200 fee for using earthworms to get the toads clean. I could put that money into other feeders and give a variety of feeders for that price. Just wanted to give an update on my toads.

I stopped feeding these years ago. I had an otherwise healthy pixie drop dead a week after feeding earthworms. Obviously parasites were not the immediate culprit but I don’t trust them. Local stores here offer the worms from the same company as sold in bait shops so I doubt their cultivation practices are geared towards healthy feeders.

sorry to hear about your amphibians, do you guys think that wild caught crawlers from my yard would also be an unsafe feeding item

There is no way of knowing if they have a parasite but most likely they would. I'm not discouraging you from using them but I'm done with them.

I feed my toads the same critters I feed my bearded dragon: crickets, superworms, the occasional mealworm. I have started a dubia roach colony as well to cut down on the cost of buying feeders.
