Hi everyone, I tried posting before, but it didn't seem to work, so if there are two of these posts, I am sorry! Anyways, I am needing help deciding on which frog/toad I would like to get. First off, let's start by saying I have never owned a frog/toad, so keep that in mind. The most important thing that I want/need my frog/toad to be is diurnal. I do not really have any interest in an animal that is nocturnal, because it seems like it would be so boring, but maybe someone has more experience with a nocturnal species and will shed some light. I would also prefer that the frog/toad tolerates handling, as I would love to be able to handle them occasionally. I do also like larger frogs, but that is not as important. I absolutely love the look of milk frogs, but they are nocturnal and pretty loud from what I've read, and the frog/toad will be in my room with me, so that is the one of the reasons I would like a diurnal pet. I like poison dart frogs as well, but they are so small and do not tolerate any handling. So, I am kind of lost. Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Josh
For someone new to amphibian keeping, I can't say enough about the good ol' American toad (or related species). Easy to find, easy to keep, great eaters, thrives in a variety of conditions, and engaging personalities. Most specimens aren't brightly colored, which may account for the fact that most hobbyists don't keep them, but they more than make up for it with their charm. Although they are primarily nocturnal, they may be out and about throughout the day, unless you have them under a bright light.
Regarding handleability; if you want a pet that you can handle, amphibians are not a good choice. Most are small, fragile, and have delicate, sensitive skin. However, I would say that toads, owing to their thicker, drier skin, are more likely to tolerate gentle, occasional handling than almost any other amphibian. But it's really best if you don't handle them more than necessary.
Hey, thanks for the response! As of right now, I actually decided to go with the Amazon Milk Frog. Although they are still nocturnal, I have always loved the look of them and think I would be happiest with them. If you have any experience with milk frogs or tree frogs, if you could go over my other post in the tree frogs section, I have a shopping list that I would like someone to go over!
Thanks again,
Josh
