Default for future reference-how to open frog's mouth??

So, I went to dd water to my frog's bowl when it decided to jump and try to swallow my beaded bracelet. It would not let go. I tried giving her a cricket and she grabbed it with the beads in her mouth. I was freaking out. I sprayed her for a while and wrestled the beads out. I got the beads and the frog went flying into a plate of teriyaki sauce. I then freaked out again and sprayed her some more to clean her off. Is there any chance I could have done damage trying to remove the bracelet? What about her landing in some sauce? Is there anything I can do to get the frog to let go if something like this happens again? Thanks!

My favorite thing to use is a credit card to slip in the side of the frogs mouth and in effect gently pry it open. I've only done this to force feed very very sick frogs who were not eating on their own though. Plus the smaller the frog the harder it is to do.

I read elsewhere on the site that one of those very soft silicone spatulas might be good, especially in the smallest (cupcake decorating or "kiddie chef") sizes.

    Hi,

    This a first !

Em and Ashley are right .I use the tiny cup cake spatula (only if necessary ) for force feeding an ill frog.

What kind of frog are we talking about !

I would simply keep an eye on the frog , if you are concerned a HERP vet would be able to take a look inside the frogs mouth.
Make sure he is eating, pooping and acting as e usually does.
Watch for any sings of swelling or drainage that make indicate an infection.
I actually would worry more about the teriyaki sauce.

I have to wonder ? What was he doing anywhere near a dish of teriyaki sauce?
Exactly how much sauce got on the frog?

I would definitely make sure the frog soaks in a container that he is unable to escape from. ( a lid with air holes ) in de-chlorinated water for about 20 min a day for a few days. Be sure the water is not above the frogs chin. Make sure he can keep his head OUT of the water. Most prepared teriyaki sauce is very high in sodium ( typically from MSG = Monosodium glutamate ), contains oil ( ie soybean oil), and spices like onion and garlic powder.

Some humans can be 'allergic" to MSG : ( i'm not assuming or insinuating this regarding your frog ) I'm just mentioning it because I think the soak is important. Remember their skin is part of there respiratory system. They exchange oxygen for carbon dioxide through their skin so I don't' have ANY idea as to what happens if things are mixed with teriyaki sauce. The duration of exposure would certainly matter. It's great that you rinsed him right away!

In humans sensitive to MSG it can cause :
    Flushing- red face
    Sweating
    Rapid, fluttering heartbeats (heart palpitations)
    Headache

Please let us know what kind of frog it is ?

Thanks for all the replies! It's a large White's tree frog. I will need to get a small spatula to have on hand I guess. I grabbed the box of crickets and put them on the counter by the sink so I could fill up a spray bottle with dechlorinated water, I wasn't really thinking about the frog landing in the sink. I was lucky that I had the spray bottle on hand to spray her down. She was in the sauce for a couple of seconds. Luckily it was home made sauce so everything in it was organic and MSG free. I put a fresh bowl of water in the tank. This morning she seems fine. Thanks again! You guys are always great to have around!

Here is a funny version of what happened.

wow, that is a first Lynn got you covered, what i can't get is how that sauce or sink was by the frog.
    anyhow stuff happens sometimes.
for future reference, never feed outside the tank, take a frog out only if absolutely necessary and make sure no food items are around
if anything like that happen first thing you need to do is to stay calm!!! whatever you do make sure you do gently without frog flying anywhere. so in case like yours you just get whatever you have close by, spatula, credit card, something thin and not sharp. I rarely use silicone, mostly i use credit card type of things because for frogs i have silicone is not working, too soft. ok, so next you gently cover a frog with one hand to make it stable and then gently open its mouth with the other one using credit card ( etc). chances are if you gently wiggle whatever he tried to grab it will release on his own and you won't need to use anything else.
Lynn got you covered on what you should do now, watch him how is is feeling, if eating/pooping/etc. i would soak him for a few days in regular warm water ( 20 min a day) to make sure whatever might get absorbed is flushed out.
Save one animal and it doesn't change the world, but it surely changes the world for that one animal!

I posted a link to the story above. I was actually just adding water when the frog jumped on my arm and bracelet. I had to go to the kitchen to get the cricket cage which is how we ended up near the sink. I think in the future i won't wear jewelry when opening the frog tank. It never even occurred to me that she would try to swallow the beads.

Glad the frog is ok. To open a frogs mouth, i use a well filed fingernail. It is important to get the fingernail in the right spot in order to not traumatize the frogs skin or jaw.
