    Question Dubia Roach Heating

    Hi!

I have a simple question that I just can't seem to figure out.

So I'm planning on breeding dubia roaches as I hear that they are quite and odorless, and I don't really care for crickets which I feed.

So I've got a sterilite container, I have no clue to the size but it's spacious enough. So while I have the other supplies here is my question.

So I need a heating source that will produce enough heat for my dubias to breed. However my mom doesn't want a heating mat (fire hazard) so I was leading towards the ceramic bulb.

If I make the metal mesh bigger then the lamp so that it (hopefully doesn't burn the plastic lid) is this a fairly safe alternative? I know they like the dark so that's why I'm thinking a ceramic/incandescent bulb. Do I need a thermostat as well for the ceramic bulb?

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks,
    Alyssa

I feel like a CHE could be a little risky for trying not to cook your roaches, but you might be able to do so with a thermostat. If you get a CHE, make sure you buy a small one since it'll make regulating the temperature's easier.

    Thanks for the advice.

I may just have to bite for the heating mat/tape then, as I think with the concern of cooking them plus all the supplies it would get pretty spendy.

I'm thinking heat tape now, and I'll just get a thermostat for it.

That sounds good. Personally, I use a heat mat for 1-3 gallon tanks with out a thermostat. It seems to be working well so far. although I have has some issues with roach breeding and haven't seen any new nymphs.

A heating pad is a much more effective way of heating them. Use one designed for reptile use, such as those offered by Reptile Basics. Heating pads intended for humans ARE a possible fire hazard. You will need a thermostat for the heating pad. If you are still concerned about a fire hazard, add a GFI cable. This will shut off the power in the unlikely event that the pad develops even a tiny short.
One final comment about odor: while dubias are indeed odorless, their waste is not, especially in the presence of moisture. You will want to clean the bin on a regular basis.

I keep our dubias in a large closed but ventilated deli cup under a low watt heat lamp, in with our vinegaroon.

An alternative to them is Banded Crickets which do not smell. I had great success breeding and I didn't even do anything. Let me say this. I bought 250 that last usually 2 weeks and my animals had other food so more crickets were left over and the banded crickets bred for 6-8 weeks until I stopped them.

You can get roaches I just wanted to give you an alternative!

    Good luck!
