Question Is a sponge filter a good filter for african clawed frogs?

Will the bubbles move the water too much and stress them out? I have some african clawed froglets and i'm afraid of them getting sucked up by my HOB so I was considering purchasing a sponge filter. Will they do a good enough job to filter the tank?

It can stress them out, some scientists say it causes a sensory overload. Also too much oxygen in the water could kill them in extreme circumstances. I'd avoid it, an under gravel one could be good. Just make sure the gravel is almost as big as the frogs-you'd be surprised at how big a rock they can swallow. Once I walked up to my tank to see mine chewing on a snail almost half as big as she was!

The thing is I have sand in my tank and my tank is 75 gallons. Virtually no under the gravel filter would work for me.

I bought a sponge filter and plan on seeding it for two weeks in another tank. I'll reply on how it goes. I plan on placing the air pump pretty far away so the vibrations caused by the air pump don't bother the frog.

That sounds good. Cool avatar by the way! The filter always depends on the tank, I used a Tetra Whisper 20i for my two ACFs. R.I.P. Neptune and Jordan

For some reason I’ve always had troubles with most tetra whisper filters. They seem to do a good job of biological filtration but a bad job of mechanical filtration. Also if you’re water level is low they’ll start ruttering. Another cool thing is how tall they are so you definitely can put in your own media.

Yeah, I wasn't as experienced with frogs then as i am now. I was going to get them a better filter eventually...

Why not put a sponge over the intake of your hob filter?
