I have a gray tree frog, about a year old. The last day or so he’s been less active, so I was a little worried. Today he was finally out and about again, but still not as active, and had left some crickets alive in his tank. So I prodded him to move and he dropped a rather large poo. I noticed a piece of my long hair was stuck to him so I tried to pull it off him, only to then realize (after his obviously uncomfortable squirming) that it was in fact COMING OUT OF HIM! Not sure how my hair got in there, let alone how he ended up ingesting it, but poor thing has it coming out of his butt now!! (And I tugged on it!!!)
So what do I need to do? Let this run its course? Trim the hair so he’s not catching it on things and tugging it further? Take him to a vet?? (Do regular vets treat frogs??)
please help!!! Thank you!!!
Some vets treat regular frogs, you might have to do a search for exotic vets and then call and ask.
However, I think watching your frog to see if it eats and moves normally might be the thing to do right now.
Well, he was acting a little lethargic all yesterday, so I’d been keeping an eye on him. It was this morning that he pooped and had the hair appear. Now there is still a part of the hair hanging out. I actually tugged on the hair before I realized it was attached to him, thinking it was just wrapped around a leg or whatever, so now I’m worried I may have made the situation worse!
It’s hard to tell if he’s being inactive now since it’s day time, but I’m worried. I did speak to an amphibian specialist today who suggested coating crickets in pumpkin so he gets some fiber and passes the hair more quickly, but I’m concerned there may be a bigger complication now.
This actually happened to me with one of my whites, I ended up just trimming the hair and letting my frog poop the rest out. I think the fact it's "passing through" in the first place is a good sign. You can try to make him pass it sooner, but you can also let nature run its course if he's otherwise eating and acting normally, as elly mentioned.
