Thread: How many frogs?

  1. #1

    Default How many frogs?

I have a 38 gallon set up and cycled. I have read all the care sheets I can find and most say 10 gallons per frog, however some also say that it depends on the floor space of the tank. Currently I have a 38 gallon and I have two clawed frogs that will move into it when they are big enough. I was wondering how many frogs total I could have in this tank. I know that a lot also depends on filtration as well, but I am curious just based on tank size.

When it comes to space for herps, I subscribe to the belief that more is better. I think two frogs is enough for your 38; however, with ample planting and hiding spots, I'm sure that four would be ok. I know of people who have kept them more crowded than that without issues, but in my opinion that is pushing it.

I am hoping to upgrade eventually. I am usually a fan of more is better as well. I would like to get a 55 or 65 for them once they are a little bigger but for now they need to grow before they can even move into the 38. My frogs are currently 1" and 1 1/2"

Why do they need to grow before you can put them in a larger aquarium?

Partly because it is housing my much larger foster boy at the moment. And partly due to the filters, I don't think the bigger tank is safe quite yet.

    OK got it.
Good luck with them, they're neat frogs.
I am currently working with Silurana tropicalis myself.

Silurana (Xenopus) tropicalis is an awesome frog! Very easy to care for and breed. They will mature faster than Xenopus laevis. They are kept he same way as X. laevis but will require a little warmer temperature. One frog for 10 gallons, 4 in a 38 gallon tank. Please post pictures!

I was looking at maybe getting them. I have no plans to breed. I am currently resealing a 55 gallon but my current tank is posted in the " My Frogs" thread.
