Thread: Urgent, injured toad

    Default Urgent, injured toad

I found a baby toad, here he is next to a q-tip so you can see how big he is. His back legs were bitten off by a turtle, I thought he was dead. I did "CPR" on him, and he is doing great now. He is even trying to crawl around, he is breathing normally and doesn't seem yo be in any pain. Should I put him back outside? He can't walk, so I'm not sure what I should do.

If it does not have its hind legs, it would be un-ethical to release it back into the wild, as it would not be able to escape from predators, or be able to burrow or swim in the breeding season. You will either have to find another home for the animal, or keep it yourself. If I were in this situation, I would look for an exotic animal vet, to check the animal to be sure there is nothing internally wrong, like punctured organs. For now, set the animal up in a sterile enclosure, with plenty of hides for the animal to shelter in, and monitor it to see if it is getting around efficiently, and catching food. Online there should be many different care-sheets for the species of toad you have (Can't tell from the photos, may you upload more? It resembles a Gulf-coast toad, but I can't exclude other options), and I would recommend reading all of them. If the wounds are still open, take some NON-PAINKILLER Neosporin and apply it to the animals wounds, again if they are open. Hope this helped!

Thank you for the tips, I really appreciate it. I did all of the above, but sadly, (probably because of his size) he passed away.
