i have a tank with 2 toads and 1 boreal chorus frog. the toads are doing fine, they are very active and looking healthy. my boreal chorus frog, which lives with the 2 toads and shares a water bowl, (for more info.) but he always hides in a patch of grass or under a piece of bark. is he sick? or is he just scared of the toads, even though the toads are as big as the frog.
Hi,
It's never really a good idea to mix species of frogs. From experience with toads I can tell you they are bold natured and aggressive feeders, a trait that the chorus frog does not share with them. In addition, the toads secrete toxins from their skin that will harm the chorus frog over time. Lastly, the chorus frog is nocturnal and doesn't really do much during the day.
In order to maintain the health of your frogs i would definitely advise separating them.
Simpler setups are easier to maintain i always say, but when the species in question is especially secretive, the best thing to do is have plenty of hiding places. The frog will be out more often if it feels that it has a safe place to hide within reach.
Again, your chorus frog is nocturnal and will only come out at night.
One more thing you can do is making sure your frog has a nice big water bowl. These frogs love water. A lot.
