Does the American toad require any special lighting? Also does the coconut fiber need to be Moist all the time or not? Thank you

Hello and welcome to frog forum!

the American Toad requires no special lighting. You must, however, provide calcium and vitamin d3 powdered supplements regularly

the coco fiber should be somewhat damp. Not too wet. When you squeeze it no water should drip out

Thank you for the quick reply. Do think I need a false bottom or the tank bottom is ok.

Also, the vitamins you mention.. If they are for reptiles can they still be used for the toad?

You shouldn't need a false bottom for American Toads. No water should accumulate at the bottom of the substrate. Yes, most reptile supplements can be used for amphibians. I recommend Repashy Calcium Plus and Repashy Multivitamins. For an adult toad you should dust the crickets or other food source with the Calcium plus every other feeding and with the Multivitamins once a week or so

Thank you Frogman. Being a baby toad should I dust his crickets or every feeding? I found the little guy on my yard after I ran over him with the lawnmower but no harm came to him. So I decided to keep him so that wouldn't happen again. I think he might of been a survivor from my one. Pond. A y other suggestions for keeping him will be appreciated. I have had him for about five weeks now and he is eating like a little fool. Been giving him very small crickets any other food suggestions?

For a baby you should definitely dust every day and use multivitamins twice a week. Also don't use both at once. Forgot to mention that.

Thank you again for the information. I will keep this updated as I go. I order a custom tank over on reptile edge for him. Should have it at the end of September. They are nice and affordable

American toads usually reach sexual maturity between one and two years of age (closer to one for males, closer to two for females)

your toad appears to already be a few months old

Thank you. I have coconut fiber. I was wondering if I can mix orchard bark with it. I have large bag of it and it large pieces so he couldn't swallow it or should I just stuck with the coconut fiber?

I would definitely advise just sticking with the coco fiber. Even if you think he can't swallow it, he probably can get it stuck in his mouth or maybe swallow a small piece when he grows bigger. Plus they may stick into him when he digs

Hi! Reptile dishes are great, as long as the toad(s) can fit comfortably inside. Distilled water, however, can leech minerals, and isn't good for frogs, but can be used for misting to avoid mineral deposits. Dechlorinating tap water is best. Good luck with the toads!

I've never used Prime personally, but It looks just fine to me, I use Amquel, which is pretty similar. The listed features are pretty much the same, and amquel was also designed with Fish in mind. You could always spring for some repti-safe, but I'm pretty sure Prime will do just fine.

Also, forgot something: One thing to note on the tank, toads don't really use vertical space, so a long tank may be better. Personally I keep my 2 Woodhouse's toads in a 90 qt Sterilite bin, and they have a lot of space to move around, and can't quite jump out even with the top off. If you'd like to read more on it, there's a tutorial on here.

It's cheap(8$ for the 90qt bin at Target near me) and gives them a lot of Floor space. Alternatively you could probably lay that one down and have the lid on top, making it longer for the toad(my apologies if you were already planning this ). I hope this helps!
