Hey all,
I have a really wonderful Whites Tree Frog, super cute and has a great personality- I've had him for 3 months now and he seems happy and healthy - EXCEPT he recently has been shedding quite often-twice a week!
I use treated tap water, and clean his tank regularly. He seems to be active and on his normal schedule apart from the shedding. I rarely handle him bc I get nervous about bacteria etc. His tank is normally around 70-80of and I try my best to keep the humidity down to 60-70.
I live in New Orleans and since it has just hit hurricane season it has been very humid - Sometimes 70-80% Could the excess humidity be a cause? Or the general summer heat?
I didn't think that they shedding pattern would change so drastically from a growth spurt so I haven't thought about that possibility- though he has been getting a bit bigger.
I am so new to owning a frog I have a hard tine judging "normal" and I really love my little dude, wouldn't want him to be sick!
Not an expert, but. In general it sounds like you're doing things right. I wouldn't worry too much about higher humidity as long as it doesn't remain that way all the time. If I had to guess I'd say that the extra shedding is probably fine, but some fungal infections can cause extra shedding, especially patchy shedding where bits of old skin hang on. I don't know of any way of determining whether the frog is really sick other than to keep a close eye on it. Look out for soaking more than normal, not moving much and not wanting to eat. Those additional symptoms, especially the lack of appetite can signal illness.
Thanks!
He seems like he is doing great- just growing a lot recently and doing much longer jumps too!
Hi Bronzino, welcome.
Everything looks fine to me as well. I'm not an expert, but have owned whites for many years.
My white's shed at least that often, so I think it's fine.
I do notice, however, that if they are handled they shed more often. Many people think that because white's tolerate handling better than other frogs, that they like it. They don't really like to be handled at all.
I actually never handle my frogs but once every couple months just to do a quick exam.
Have fun with your new little guy!
Edit: I re-read your post. I thought you said you DO handle your white's often. My bad. Long day.
