Today was the first warm weekend of the year in California, the temps got to 80. And so did my tank. It's at 80F right now.
No frog in the tank is complaining, they all seem healthy. In fact, Boy Were They Calling Last Night and they are still laying eggs now and then. (wish they would stop laying eggs, I have enough toadlets)
I know, based on past years, that the hottest days of the year can get to 86F degrees inside of my house.
I've heard that FBTs have a 'do not exceed' temperature of about 85F. I'm going to meet or beat that a day or two this summer.
Anything I can do about that?
Chillers seem both expensive and overkill.
Or can they weather a heat wave?
freeze some distilled water and toss ice cubes in the tank now and then?
Ambient/water temps above 82F will probably kill them and should be 72-75F to 78F max. if hot days are infrequent, placing the tank on the floor, turning off filters and lights and adding cool dechlorinated water should do, but this is not a long term solution. ideally you need to have air conditioning or a cooler to keep these frogs in warm areas. I'm at the other side of things and keep an african bullfrog in scotland (which is pretty cold) and in order to keep it i have the room heater, nightmare.
i forgot to mention, blinds closed and windows open should help
Well, the tank is in the most shaded portion of the house. I use ceiling fans to cool myself, and whilst that is effective and economical for me, it does nothing for my FBT tank. Outside temps were 94F today. The tank is currently, at 6:20pm, at 81F. That's it for this short heat wave. But it seems that I should take some steps of some sort before the inevitable 100F day.
Seems like the warmer it is, the more eggs they lay. Dammit. Don't need any more of those.
I wonder if I allowed more airflow by using a screen rather than a solid hood...then made it 'rain' with the filter pump return...perhaps the evaporation would be enough to cool a few degrees? Which is all I need to do...reduce the temps by just a few degrees.
My pacman frog is on a thermostat. Eternal summer for him. 84F.
i think the screen top might be enough, hoods are really bad for keeping in too much heat. They do lay eggs at warm temps, but you don't want anything above 82F, that's the absolute maximum temperature. in the wild the pools heat up with the sun and this helps egg development and they like to bask, but they can also retreat into some shade to cool down when necessary. take all of those steps and see what happens, but maybe some portable air conditioner in the room set on a thermostat may be necessary. if you give them rain, that will just encourage more breeding
