Default How to get rid of unwanted flies

    Hi,

I have a couple of terrariums in my apartment and they've become the home of unwanted flies. I'd like to find a way to get rid of them.... especially since I have a feeling they're slowly upping their numbers.

I don't know what species they are. They're about the size of fruit flies, but they look more frail. I think of them as humidity flies because they stick more around my humid terrariums, but I'm pretty sure this has nothing to do with their real name.

They don't sting or anything, but I don't like having them fly in my guests' faces and ending up in drinking glasses...

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Simon

Vacuum cleaner. Suck them out as often as you see them, then in a few days their breeding cycle will be interrupted and they'll be gone till the next one gets in there to lay eggs.

You might put a piece of nylon mesh such as one of those bags they use for onions at the grocery. That'll keep you from accidentally sucking up one of your herp's.

A cup of apple cidar vinegar set out will attract them. Dump in toilet. Repeat! Lol!

    Hi,

I'll try those things. I found a used handheld bagless vacuum cleaner.

I have my doubts regarding the vinegar because they don't seem attracted to rotting fruit the way fruitflies are, but, who knows...

    Thanks

I have had various fly infestations over the years myself. They are attracted to decaying organic material. I have found that I can get rid of them by doing two things:
    - Keep your enclosures immaculately clean. The flies are attracted to animal droppings, dead insects, uneaten food, dirty water, etc. In a naturalistic vivarium, this can be difficult. Cleaner organisms, such as isopods, may help.
    - Hang flypaper above areas where flies congregate. The fumes are non-toxic, and eventually, every fly will land on it.
