I've hady fire belly toad for about a week now and I found it was easy for the crickets to go over to the water and drown themselves. I was wondering if there was an easier way to make them not get in the water but still be accessible to my toad?
In setups with lots of water, I've always found it easier to either use forceps to feed my frogs or just take them outside the tank in a separate container to feed them.
Litoria caerulea 1.1.0 (White's Tree Frog)
Lampropeltis triangulum hondurensis 0.1.0 (Anerythristic Honduran Milk Snake) Tliltocatl albopilosus 0.0.2 (Curly Hair Tarantula)
Aphonopelma hentzi 0.0.1 (Texas Brown Tarantula)
Avicularia avicularia 0.0.2 (Pinktoe Tarantula)
Brachypelma smithi ex. annitha 0.0.1 (Mexican Giant Red Knee Tarantula) Monocentropus balfouri 0.0.2 (Socotra Island Blue Baboon Tarantula)
Harpactira pulchripes 0.0.1 (Golden Blue Leg Baboon Tarantula)
I have larger pieces of gravel or stone strategiacally placed throughout the water that gives the crickets a fair chance at getting to safety.
I find it interesting that some crickets will immediately swim to safety and others will play dead for upwards of a couple minutes before attempting to move again. Sometimes the frogs seem to know they are playing dead in the water and once they start swimming they get eaten.
After an hour or so I just remove the uneaten or drowned crickets. A long handled plastic spoon works good for the drowned ones.
Duckweed and miniature lillies, gives the crickets a hawl out, but also the frogs love to hide and blend into the plants.
