today as I was cleaning my frog's cage, I noticed something when I put it into a plastic box.
When I rotated the box slightly, this little frog who is otherwise motionless, turned his head the other way. He counter-rotated. Just leaning a little bit, but it's keeping it's eyes fixed on what it's looking at. turning the box slightly to each side makes the frog peer to each opposite side as it tries to keep its eyes fixed on its subject, whatever that is.
Then I started turning around. When I rotated counterclockwise, holding the frog's box, the frog would rotate clockwise. I reversed. So did the frog. I span around many times and so did the frog. I got dizzy at this point and the experiment was over. Since the frog was not rotating, i'm sure the frog was not dizzy.
This frog was maintaining it's bearing.
that's sort of weird.
this is a juvenile pacman frog by the way. it got a weigh-in today. 10.95g.
They do have a righting reflex. In fact a frog lying on it's back is a sign it's very sick or dead.
