Thread: moss substrate?

    Default moss substrate?

hello all! this might seem like a stupid question. my terrarium (empty of herps) currently has a coconut husk substrate. I was thinking of using that as the base for a moss carpet. would moss be ok for L. caerulea? are there any problems you think moss might cause that would not happen if I kept the substrate as it is? thanks!

    Default Re: moss substrate?

Moss carpet or moss? I have read that the strands of moss on these carpets will come of an pose an inpaction risk. Natural moss can be used but there are two concerns of mine with using it. Whites don't require high humidity and the moss might may make their enclosure too moist for them and could lead to infections. There's also an impaction risk with the cheapy green moss, but long fibre sphagnum moss is better, though it's best to feed by tongs even with this type. I think coco fiber is probably you're best option as it absorbs moisture but not too much and it's less impaction risk. I do hate it though as it makes such a mess. A great substrate is foam. With the foam the impaction risk is non existent and your frog can't find it's insects very easily. Joshsfrogs sells this as "frog foam" If you get upholstery foam then you should try get one without any fire retardants, not sure if rinsing would be enough to make it safe
