Thread: African Dwarf Frogs

    Default African Dwarf Frogs

I have purchased 2 frogs and paired then with 2 glo fish. In 3 days I lost both my frogs and 1 of my glo fish. I replaced the glo fish and one of the frogs. What am I do that's causing them to die? The have a filter with a air tube, a live plant, a heater, a thermometer to make sure the tank water temp is correct. I'm lost on why they keep dying. Any advice?

you should probably quarantine the animals before you pair them. sorry about your loss!

Is the filter established? Perhaps your tank is too new?

Yes, everything was previously setup. Although now the newer one seems to be doing well. Idk if maybe I got a couple sick fish.

The mortality rate on african dwarf frogs from big box stores is quite high. The few I've purchased all died shortly after bringing them home from the pet store. I've kept african clawed frogs for about 5 years now without a single issue but I just can't seem to keep african dwarf frogs alive. Maybe try an african clawed frog instead? They need a 20 gallon tank and are a lot hardier, live a lot longer, and IMO, are more interesting aquatic frogs.

There's a few other things to consider here too though, how big is this tank? Was it cycled? When you first setup a tank and toss livestock in, ammonia builds up and that kills fish (and aquatic frogs). When you say you had an air tube filter, was it a sponge filter or just an air pump? Air pump won't replace a filter, unless you do daily water changes. Did you use a dechlorinator (like seachem prime)? Chlorine will kill fish (and aquatic frogs).

This is how you cycle an aquarium: http://www.oscarfishlover.com/how-to...-your-aquarium

It's a filter that's operated by a air pump. (It cones in an GloFish tank setup). I do have dechlorinator. I have an alligator snapping turtle which also can't have chlorine in his tank. Currently I only have 1.5 gal.

    I'd get a 10 gallon from walmart as a bare minimum, they're only $15.
