We just acquired a new American toad from the wild. He or she seems quite young. We set up a habitat and he has happily been eating crickets and enjoying his water dish. I have 2 questions. What is the optimal temperature/humidity I should aim for inside his tank? And should I bring him in to the vet to make sure he is healthy or is that not necessary? I want him to be healthy and survive, as we are already attached to him. Thank you!

I would forgo the vet visit unless he or she appears ill. Most ppl keeping Americans recommend room temps for their toads; however, I'd like to suggest a warm spot from an overhead heat source. Misting the tank once or twice a day (at most) should take care of all humidity issues and a deep enough substrate that he or she can burrow into should be available. Good luck with your new toad, ~Justin.
Thank you! I have the heat lamp so I'll set it up.
