Thread: Red eyed or reed frogs?

  1. #1

Default Red eyed or reed frogs?

I have done a few 10 gallon conversions, and really enjoy doing them. I want to make a really nice one with tree frogs, and I am still trying to decide between red eyed tree frogs or reed frogs. Either way I don't plan on getting them until mid March (as I plan to start the Viv this weekend). So I was wondering, which ones are more interesting? How many of each could I hypothetically fit in a 10 gallon vert? (Will be very well planted). Thank you!

P.S., I included an image of my Last project, for thumbnail dart frogs.

    Nice terrarium!

You'd need to get verification from someone else, but I believe reed frogs are smaller, so they might need less space. In addition red eyed tree frogs are arboreal and like to spend most of their time up in branches so they might need more climbing space.

I do not actually have experience with either species and I'm just going by what I've heard on the forum so take this with a grain of salt.

That's about what I have gotten from misc. Other sources, they way I understand it, I could fit 3-4 reed frogs, but they need a large water feature, which could be a problem for crickets. Red eyes, on the other hand, are larger so I could only fit 2-3?? Not quite sure because there is a lot of information that contradicts other information. :^(

If I've worked out the volume correctly (gallons are different in the UK from the US!) I think we are talking something like a 12"x12"x18" ? If so this is too small for even one Red Eye.

Similar, but a few inches taller and a few inches thinner

I could probably go with a 20h (24×13×17 in) after petco's next dollar per gallon sale. (Anyone know when that is, BTW)

Wouldn't house red eyes in anything smaller than a 29 gallon. Not a lot would fit in that planted tank sadly, at least not long term

Would reed frogs work in a 10 gallon vert?

Sorry, I just noticed afterwards that the tank you showed us was for thumbnails and not the one for tree frogs, so that's what I meant by accept from thumbnails, which I'd imagine would do fine in a 10 gallon. Not sure on reed frogs myself, someone else will need to answer that.

I have a trio of RETF and am thinking about reed frogs in the future. I originally thought of the 12x12x18 for the red eyes but realized that it would be too small. They 're currently in a 24x10x24 and have been doing well for nearly a year. Some of the care sheets I've been reading about reed frogs recommend the 12x12x18 for 3-4. I've decided I'd be more comfortable with an 18x18x18 which I have, but haven't found a place to put yet.

Haha! Yes! Thank you, you just reminded me I have an empty 18×18×18, I will just use that for the red eyes
    Thanks!
