    Exclamation Warning Dr Frye

    Hey guys

i got a dying whites tree frog and after being told by a few people to go to Dr frye I did. Couple of you are also from Canada and this was his reply....

Marie, I am sorry to say I haven't read your entire e-mail. Michigan State law prohibits veterinarians from offering medicine or medical advice to anyone living outside of the United States. I do not agree with this law, but I must abide by it. I wish I could help and am sorry.

    Sincerely,
    David M. Frye, DVM

beware if you are from Canada cause he will NOT help you!!!!

    Thanks USA!!!!

i am sorry for what you are going thru, but the Dr cannot endanger his license by doing anything illegal. if he loses his license a lot more people and animals would suffer.

I am not getting why are you so upset. You didn't want to go to local vets if I remember correctly. Different countries, different states, different provinces, different laws. Here in Canada none of the vets would consult over the emails, drugs that are over the counter in US are by prescription only here, that applicable not only to veterinary medicine, but for human medicine too. People who suggested you to contact Dr. Frey were probably not aware you live in different country or just didn't realize the border restrictions.
I don't know your current situation, but in both Edmonton and Calgary there are vets who work with amphibians and know what they're doing. If your frogs are sick you should seek in person consultation and treatment.
Save one animal and it doesn't change the world, but it surely changes the world for that one animal!

    Default Warning Dr Frye

I have to agree with Lija. Dr. Frye is a wonderful vet. Unfortunately, you can have your license revoked if you don't follow the rules. Not worth giving up your career. He's a great vet and has done tons to help the herp and reptile hobby. I can attest to this personally, as he has helped me to rescue some retf's and Ceratophrys.

We may not always look at the members location, so I apologize if we did not see where you were from. See if you can try and find an exotic vet there.

really? Durn America and our laws. Can Canadian vets give someone in America medical advice for their pets? Maybe you should stick with one of them?

    Lija,

if if you have a look at my post, the very first thing I did was a vet emergency visit. The vet and I kept contact for over three weeks and I called about 6 or 7 other vet in the Edmonton area and no one does amphibian or reptile. The only one is the one I went to I. Sherwood park and the other vets kept recommending me the same place. They have been good to me and my little guy but I wanted another opinion. My home flag shows very clearly below my user name.

And I am upset because I ended up putting my baby to sleep as no one could do or say anything more than what was said about his situation cause other vets in Alberta don't deal with reptile..

FYI.. Your comment was very HURTFULL AND RUDE after saying I wouldn't seek vet help and that's the very first thing I did and kept I contact with my vet the whole time. Next time, read the threads properly!

As for everyone else that has tried to help and make comments, I appreciate the thoughts and all I was doing was eating people form Canada to not seek help to him as he will not help you.

I agree he should not loose his license or dream career about it but it's pretty darn upsetting having a dying baby and being told by everyone how good this guy is and he is the most recognize hero vet out there and being from a different country, I couldn't get help from him! There isn't a actual herp doc like him in Canada and YES it is absolutely upsetting!! I wish we could have the best herp doctor like Dr Frye!

Not once nor did I ever started thread with intention of talking down about him!

Pleasr people, read what he says and don't read between the line! I am absolutely allowed to be upset that Canada doesn't have such a great doctor and to warn Canadians to not do what I did and get told that sorry, no help available there!

    jezzzzzz people

FYI - I had to put my baby to sleep as no one could help or diagnose him and give him proper treatment! Whatever bacteria/viral infection he had still hasn't been diagnosed, wasn't red leg and wasn't protozoan , and all my other ones are still healthy! So still... No answers on what it is and I so DO NOT wish this unexplained killer to anyone of you pet owners!

As the good doctor states, it's a state law not a federal one. Blame Michigan, not the whole country.

    For Marie Pey,

I'm sorry you had to put your Whites.
Now that things are 'seemingly' okay..... below is a small lists of 'reptile and amphibian' vets near Alberta.
    There are many more.

Try calling every single one to find one that will treat frogs.

Ask every one if they have the means to swab your remaining frogs for Ranavirus.
I hope you are successful in finding a vet for your frogs.
As you know when keeping them, or therefore any amphibian, it's a must have!

Actually, testing for Chytrid or Ranavirus is simple, and requires taking samples with skin swabs, then sending them to a laboratory for a PCR analysis.

    - supplies for swabs can be purchased here:

    http://www.vetdna.com/test-type/reptiles

Obviously, if any swabs were to come back positive you would still need to find a vet to try to treat/create a treament plan.

    Best, Lynn

Sorry to hear about your White's. It is always frustrating how difficult it is to find a vet specializing in reptiles and amphibians. I have found out that working at the zoo as an amphibian keeper, frogs are not the easiest to treat. They are very sensitive and often do not respond to medication. For those who are looking for a reptile and amphibian vet, may I suggest going to the http://arav.org/. On this site you can search for reptilian and amphibian vets from all over the world. There are 11 ARAV members in Alberta.
