Thought I'd do an update on my Cane toad. For the last month or so I suspected that he may have had parasites but found out I took an inaccurate humidity reading, this most likely was the problem and switched heat sources from a ceramic heat emitter to infra red heat lamp to a heat mat, so far the heat mat has been the best as it does not kill the humidity. He's only ate a few times infront of me but I've been leaving mealworms in a dish for him and seen that in the morning he's munched through most of them. Hoping to start taking him out and putting him in a large rub to feed him crickets. So far despite the toads bold appearance he's definitely one of the most anti-social amphibian I have! I say he as I suspect it is a male due to the size. Hoping to get him a companion at some point.
So far the set up consists of a large wide Exo Terra terrarium, coarse bark and moss substrate, XL turtle hut, XL Exo terra water dish, Heat mat on thermostat and soon to put a Komodo 10% UVB in the light dome.
Sorry for the angle of the image, you'll have to tilt your head
Good to hear your toads doing better but it's not the heat that's killing your humidity it's that screen top.
Indeed! I covered half of it with plastic wrap when I used the above heat sources but still humidity was a problem, so far it doesn't seem too bad with the heat mat
When you say heat mat do you mean a uth type or one you put inside the enclosure?
UHT heat mat on the side end wall, on the outside glass
added another plant and re-did it abit so to provide shade for the toad to self regulate from the UVB (that's in the mail) will probably use a larger light dome at some point too.
Nice setup man, I think the second setup looks better with the added greenery. How big do these guys get? Cane toads can grow fairly large cant they?
Thanks dude! They grow pretty big females upto 7" and males 6" max but I've seen larger than that in photos, I'd guesstimate my guy at around 5 inches and he's really tall when he stands up
I thought these were the big guys just wasn't sure. And I would have to agree about seeing bigger in photos, I have seen a couple of the documentaries on how there so invasive in parts of Australia and some of these guys look bigger then 7''. Some of them look massive. I take it with them being such a invasive species and so common that a lot of these guys would be wild caught? would that be a correct assumption?
Maybe they sizes were just the average, probably that. I seen a picture of one that looked about 10"+ looked pretty cool! Yeah pretty much all in the pet trade are wild caught which isn't too bad if they're invasive and causing problems in places. They get treated so badly in Australia it's such a shame
clean looking setup. have you ever experimented with a deeper substrate?
thanks! yeah I have but found it a night mare to clean so just got him that turtle hut so should make him feel secure enough not to burrow but we'll see how it goes
did he burrow when you had a deeper substrate? and what type of material did you used?
Yeah and coco fiber but I provided cork bark for a hide so he had to make a burrow under. Although toads burrow I don't think they'll mind as long as a hide is provided and conditions are right
Thanks Jason
