Thread: 40 Breeder Build!!

  1. #1

    Default 40 Breeder Build!!

And so it begins! I currently have a 10 gallon paludarium with 3 fire belly toads. They seem like they need some more room, and I can see all the mistakes I made with my first attempt.
I've found an awesome piece of driftwood that I'll be using as a divider between land and water. I'm using a piece of plexiglass behind the wood. I have a reptofilter for a waterfall. I will have pics to follow!!
My question is since I will have at least 8" of water in half of the tank, can I keep endlers in there? I'm hoping to "combine" 2 of my tanks...

Looks awsome! I was kinda thinking a remodel as well for my firebellies.

Do you have any plans for some water plants?

    Thanks!!
I have some "dwarf" hair grass that's actually long to put in. Other than that I was hoping for something with a little color. Ever see an ammannia gracilis in red?

Looks great! What did ya use to glue the stones together?

Black aquarium sealant! It seems to be holding! I wanted to be able to move the wall to access pump. Much harder than my 10 gallon which I permanently glued the waterfall but could remove the pump. The driftwood locks this pump in place! I like a challenge!!

I'm interested in using ajuga as a ground cover. Is that safe? It grows like a weed outside! Here's a pic

Looks like what you have is ajuga reptans. I'm not familiar with it being used in frog tanks, but it's a member of the mint family so I might exercise caution unless others know for sure. No personal experience with it myself. Appears to be
a very fast grower and can take over quickly.

Progress so far! Not happy with my land plant selection, but the frogs seem to like the extra space!

Really nice set up! My only concern is are that you are using LED lighting when Fire bellied toads are diurnal and I've read they like to bask. There's a debate going on currently on the forum about UVB lighting and although I don't agree that all amphibians need it, it would just make sense to provide it to an animal that is active during the day.

I'm not going to debate it or tell you that you have to provide it because these frogs have been kept for years with out but I personally would always use it for an animal that chooses to be active during the day. I have noticed MDB in FBTs that have been captive raised or long term captives, were as the wild caught have been in perfect condition, though I am unsure if this is due to lack of dietary supplementation or UVB.

Never less, I really like what you've done!

Thanks! I'm not happy with the lighting either. I got that led on eBay. I think I'm returning it. What do you suggest? It's a 36" long tank

    with that size I'd probably go for a 30-36" T8 http://www.exo-terra.com/en/products...cent_bulbs.php
or if you can get a hold of arcadia products http://www.arcadia-reptile.com/wp-co...belly-toad.jpg http://arcadia-reptile.com/fluoresce...orescent-lamp/

I'd at least provide a 2% UVB for the plants and the toads. It seems arcadia recommends a 2% and exo terra 5% according to the UV charts.

I dig it but agree on the lighting. I switched over to a T8 with UVB and they seem to really like the change and do like to bask. Just be careful as it seems the land is pretty close to the top of the tank so you might need to raise the lights a bit.

What did you end up using for ground cover?

T5's love to eat electricity. Bulbs are pricy as well. We have a huge pile of stainless t5 grow lights sitting in the other room collecting dust.

Accidentally put T5 but I actually have a T8. Edited for posterity.
