Could I use organic potting soil that contains poultry litter as a substrate for my viv. All the yards in my neighborhood are sprayed and fertilized so much you never see a toad or frog around anymore.
I think if you can find just plain topsoil (mix of humus and sand) that would be better. That is what I use for my toads. Potting soils tend to be higher in nitrogen and I am not sure that would be good for the toads. I buy bags of topsoil at Ace Hardware for about $4 for a 1.5 cubic ft bag. One bag fills my kiddies' wading pool which is the toad habitat.
Thanks I'll look for that.
Poultry litter is high in nitrogen that can burn plants and even cause nitrate uptake problems in animals if the potting soil contains to much and it is not composted first- if you want a quality soil, find someone that raises rabbits and get some rabbit manure, it only has a moderate amount of nitrogen but as far a nutrients are concerned it is well balanced ( and worms love the stuff ).
Yes, avoid that additive at all costs.

Go to Lowes. I purchased all natural, additive free topsoil from there for $1.64 for a 40lb bag. I mixed it 50/50 with co-co fiber and it worked out great. There is no type of manure or anything in this stuff. I also went to Lowe's three different times, spoke with three different people, asking them if they carried topsoil that contained no additives, manure, etc. All three times I was directed towards the same bag so the third time, I bought it!
