Default Is it okay to use substrate from outside?

I have a great plains toad, is it okay if I use substrate from somewhere like a forest? would it work if I tried putting it in the oven or in the freezer?

I wouldn't recommend using substrate from outside, but if you do, try to heat it in an oven, or something that can heat it up and kill all the micro organisms in it.
