Craziest thing happened today and I wish I snapped a pic. I've heard of this but never witnessed it before.
I walked over near my tank and noticed 3 of my frogs congregating on a large flat rock like they often do cause it's where I typically drop dinner. Only one difference, one of them was flat on their back, bright red belly facing the sky, hands and feet perfectly still.
Immediately, I panicked. He's dead! Heart attack! Which one killed him?! Get him out and check your water quality!
After what seemed like an eternity, blood rising, heart pounding, was actually about 5 seconds, I looked closer and saw him breathing. Wheew!
5 seconds of absolute stillness later he flipped himself off the rock into the water and stared up at me. Nobody else moved. I was relieved but also curious about the behavior. Quick Wikipedia search and..
"They often display the unken reflex when disturbed; the animal will arch its back and limbs to expose the bright belly, and may turn over on its back."
It was pretty cool to witness. I'm just wondering what disturbed him that much in there? My cat can't get up to the front of his tank and it was before I even walked over there that he was in this position. I have no idea how long and why so it remains a mystery.
Or he may have just been warming his belly. [emoji2]
