A non-frog amphibian for anyone who's interested; a few quick shots of Hynobius sonani, taken in the Central Mountains of Taiwan. One of five native salamanders, all Hynobiids, all endemic, all vulnerable.
(There are some questionable reports of Chinese giant salamanders, Andrias davidianus, inhabiting mountain streams, but if correct these are probably released animals. There are also reports of Anderson's crocodile newt, Echinotriton andersoni, having lived on the island in the past, but it's now considered extinct.)
The pictures aren't very well composed as I wanted to be fairly quick in letting him get back under his rock. Beautiful though, and really not done justice by the pictures. Quite a powerful little mover too.
Thanks for looking!
