Default Summer, fruit fly cultures keep crashing.

So it keeps happening, and in the pet store it apparently happened as well. Any tricks out there to keep cultures from crashing? Thanks!

What kind of media are you using to culture.

I've only been culturing fruit flies for half a year now but here's the tricks that have helped me:

If mold is taking over then try adding some vinegar to the water before mixing the media - this helped my culture tons.

If if the media gets hard or crackly as it crashes then it could be drying out so adding a tiny water every few days may help.

Could just need try switching medias? Hard to say. Good luck!

The cultures are store bought from Petco, and everything looks fine. They just die, while there is good food left that is perfectly moist. I had the same issue last year with homemade media. My room gets pretty hot from attic air leaking down, I'm wondering if it is temperature related? In the mean time there seems to be plenty of wild flies outside (and in the kitchen unfortunately) and I think they'll get me through until my froggies get bigger, but it is mysterious...

That would make sense, as that's pretty much what is happening. I'll move them downstairs and see what happens...

Numerous things can cause a culture to crash. Over population, under population, humidity (and lack thereof), temps, ect. If your room is getting above the 85* mark, I would be more concerned about any frogs in the room more so than a crashed culture. Those temps can be deadly to numerous species.

Hmm, I didn't think about the frogs... I'll have to figure out how hot it actually is, and adjust accordingly. In the mean time I have figured out how to catch and dust wild fruit flies, so my woes are over for the moment. But yeah I'm definitely going to put a thermometer in the room itself, and turn on the AC.

i have had bad luck in winter, when the downstairs gets too dry. Humidity is def better, and not too hot. I have used both Josh's frogs mix, and also Repashy Superfly. I think the Superfly might be better in certain situations, but overall they work pretty much the same. I keep Hydei, which are bigger and my Azureus love them.

Someoen told me- always split a culture. When you buy one, mae one and dump a bunch of flies into the new culture, and keep splitting them, this way you save some money. the supplies can be found on Josh's frogs or other frog supply.
