    Default Four Froggy Sanctuary

I have four "Patricia" frogs that will be joining me this Thursday (July 2, 2015). I am adopting them from Josh's Frogs. I have a temporary quarantine, welcome facility for them. Hopefully everything will go smoothly on the day. I am excited. I will post pictures when I can. Thank you everyone for the information, guidance, and support.

I have a couple interesting questions for when they get here. Should I feed them on the first day? Does it make any difference if I feed them in the morning or evening? Thank you.

Time of feeding would normally depend on wether the frog is nocturnal or diurnal. Nocturnal frogs tend to hunt at night and opposite for diurnal. The nocturnal frogs sleep during the day.

Yes, feed them when you get them. And no, it makes no difference when you feed them.

What size tank are they eventually going in? Tincs can get very aggressive if kept in a group. Keep a close eye for bullying as they age.

Yes feed them as soon as you get them in the QT tank. They may not eat right away and that is fine. They will be stressed from their journey.

In case you haven't received frog via mail before. It is best to open the cups they come inside the QT tank and lay them over to give the frog a nice easy way out. Let the frogs come out on their own and dont worry if they take a bit to decide it is safe to venture forth.

It doesn't matter when you feed the frogs. I prefer to feed mine around midday to give them more time with the lights on to hunt and eat their fill, but I am an odd duck like that.

Thank you. This means a lot being a newbie. I have done all the preparation that I can think of. What worries me is what I haven't thought of. Thanks to you all, I think I know enough to keep them alive long enough for me to figure everything out properly. LOL

I will post pictures when I can.

The frogs are coming from Josh's frogs. At the moment, I have a 10 gallon aquarium with sphagnum moss, magnolia leaves and a small "dish" with a little bit of water in it. My current thought process is to keep them in there for a week maybe two so that I can ensure they are physically okay and see how much they eat before moving them to their virgin home.

I was thinking of getting a smallish container, a couple of gallon sized, since I am only going to house them for a very short time. I have heard of people using shoe box sized containers to quarantine their frogs.

You can technically QT them in anything, but with 4 of them a 10g tank is probably best. I personally dont use moss in my QT tanks. I use white unprinted paper towels laid out flat on the bottom. I soak wet them with distilled water. This lets me see if they are pooping ok and look for any issues with their poop. If you do the paper towel style you will want to add some plant clippings and a leaf or 2 for them to climb on and hid under.

You should honestly QT them for at least 30 days before moving them into a planted tank. You also should wait to move frogs into a planted tank until it has been up and running for around 30 days. This will allow you time to tweak thing in the main tank and make sure you can reliably keep the temp and humidity up where you need it to be.

Yesterday I got four dart frogs from a company called Josh's Frogs. Unfortunately one of the four did not survive the journey and another is showing signs of stress and not certain if he/she will make it. Josh's Frogs will send me replacement frogs as needed. I have included a couple of pictures of my two new more active roommates. They are in a temporary enclosure to make it easier for me to get to know them. They will move to their permanent home in a couple of weeks/month. Overall I am pleased with how everything is coming together. I want to thank everyone for the support and advice.

    John

The first of my new roommates.

The boldest of the newest roommates.

The stressed out roomie one trying to relax in the froggy pool.

The two most active roomies seeking the high ground.

They look great! Sorry to hear about the other 2. Hopefully Josh takes good care of you and gets you some healthy replacements.

This makes me wonder a bit more about JF lately. Their site use to say Well started Juveniles 4 months and older. Not it says 2 months.. 2 months is to young to be selling baby frogs in my opinion, but that is just my opinion.

One of the two that I was worried about is starting to come around, but I did loose the one. I called JF and they are sending a replacement to arrive Thursday morning. They were saying that last week's shipments seemed to have difficulties. I have no worries that the next frog will arrive safe and healthy. It has been a great learning experience to see how frogs look and behave when stressed and then do what is necessary to relieve that stress. The three seem to be doing well and will hopefully continue to do better. I got one of the small round quarantine tank. I lined the new tank with white paper towels, some leaf litter and a small sloped water dish. I want to make sure there isn't any lingering evidence of "death" in the tank. I am also hoping that I will be able to track better their eating and digestive behaviors. New pictures will be taken over the weekend. Thank again for all the support.

Agreed. 2 months is way too young. No wonder they didn't fare well in shipping. That's why I only purchase frogs through private breeders.

I have a silly question. How can I tell if they are pooping? LOL. I know it sounds stupid/silly, but I am not exactly sure what to be looking for. You guys raised an interesting point regarding the age in which to ship/sell frogs. What age are the frogs you usually get?

Dart frog poop looks like mouse poop. Small, little black tubes a few mm long.

The frogs I normally get are no younger than 4 months old. Occasionally, the local breeder I get mine from will sell me younger froglets, since they only need to travel for 5 minutes, and he knows they are in good hands.

Thank you for the information. I was curious and may go with someone else if/when I do another viv. I now have four seemingly happy frogs. They do seem to be eating because I now know they are pooping. Timing is everything because when Chipmunk told me what to look for, I found several sets of droppings. Hopefully they are from multiple frogs and not just one.

Yesterday, July 11th, I went to Omaha Zoo and enjoyed seeing two separate displays on dart frogs. During a behind-the-scenes tour, I was told the keepers try to do various activities to break the monotony of captivity, including dart frogs. An example of such an activity with regular pets is putting peanut butter inside a cong toy for dogs. I was told that the frog keepers poke holes in film canisters and put feeder insects inside them to encourage problem-solving behavior in the frogs. It sounds interesting, to at least us humans, and not completely sure it actually works with frogs. I am curious enough to try once I get them into their permanent living quarters. We will see. As an experiment, I put a piece of sweet potato, that I am using to culture isopods into their quarantine chamber. The potato "shell" did have some baby isopods in it. I am curious if they will see and hunt them.

I am definitely keeping them in quarantine for at least another full week. That will put 3 in there for 3 weeks and one for 2. They seem to be getting along great, so far. Two of the first three seem to have bonded and hang out/hide together. Very interesting. Thinking maybe I should do a blog of some sort tracking their behavior. But it sounds like a lot of work.

Thank you again for all the suggestions, information, assistance and support.
