Thread: Frenchy keeps making this noise! What does it mean?

  1. #1

Question Frenchy keeps making this noise! What does it mean?

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4PoQQ...e_gdata_player

Its the noise that you hear at 22 seconds... It doesnt sound like a croak, like the males mating call. Its not an "eh!" its a "brd-d-d-d". Sounds more rumbling, like an old engine trying to start. Is this a call of females, or males? What does it mean? is it purely territorial?

I think it's a distress/release call, either one means that one does not want to breed, so

Yeah?? is it a call of males or females, do you know? Frenchy was doing it while sitting in the water, once catching sight of Newbie, my newer Red Eye.

If the call was made while in the water, upon sight of the new frog, then I'd guess it's a males "come here, baby!" call :P

And they do have multiple vocalizations. I've heard 3 distinct sounds from my guys with minor variations on each.

Thanks for your input! Frenchy's been doing it more and more lately! Always in the water when he does it. I did read also that males climb down from the trees and go to the water when wanting to mate in the wild and start calling. So i do agree that he is probably male! so now Im just waiting to see what Newbie turns out to be. Right now Newbie is exactly the same length as Frenchy, he/she has grown so quickly. Hopefully the little one will exceed Frenchy's length, I really want to breed them.

Interesting! Do they all mean the same thing? I wonder why Frenchy uses that chuckling call instead of the croaking one?

I definitely also have three distinct vocalizations from my males including the one you're referring to. I don't speak RETF for the specifics, but for sure it's breeding/territorial as the males do the calling 'at' the females but also much more so at each other when fighting. (Incidentally RETF wrestling is absolutely hilarious, I'll try and get a video as mine are having some sort of world series at the moment).
They don't actually breed in water, but in the leaves above it of course. Mine tend to call most while jumping/charging around the leaves and branches chasing each other.

Ah okay! So either way, hes definitely male! Good to know. Question, have you ever witnessed territorial calls between an adult male and a younger red eye? Like would Frenchy make that call even towards a female if that female wasnt an adult yet?
