Hello everybody! I'm a little worried about my pacman frog because he's losing his appetite and he's becoming a picky eater. He's still tiny but growing and should be large enough to take bits of nightcrawler. He's lost quite a bit of weight and is small again. He won't eat more than one or two crickets and is starting not to eat at all. He won't accept nightcrawlers and I'm going to continue feeding him his usual crickets but I want to start him off on small roaches as well. The ones they sell at my local Petco are the perfect size for him but they are not Dubia roaches, as far as I can find they don't seem to sell them around here. They only sell regular roaches but I've heard pacmans have trouble digesting the shells and they have little nutritional value. Is that true or can he eat them safely?
What kind are "regular" roaches? There's a lot of different kinds.
I'm not an expert on pacmans but if you can find out what kind of roaches they are that might help the real experts give you an answer.
Like crispy42 said. Regular Roaches is vague.
When I think regular roaches I think German or American.
When I think regular roaches in the herp culture I think dubias. But there's a vast variety of roaches. Even I breed a species of hissers roaches.
And dubias are safe for both Whites and Pacs. Wonderful source of nutrition for pacs.
Four most common house hold roaches
Dubias
A few variations of hissers.

Thanks Brittany! Now that I look at the pictures you provided I think what I call "regular roaches" that they sell at Petco are in fact juvenile dubias. I'm sure he'll enjoy them. When he gets to his adult size I'm going to give him hissers which my local Petco sells as "Giant Islander Roaches."
Thanks Cris! I just looked at a few reference pictures and I think the regular roaches I mentioned are actually juvenile dubias. He'll enjoy those. Just hope he bothers to eat them at this point lol.
I've heard some are stubborn to eat dubias at first but that almost all pacs love them. (: I wish you luck. Lol, I've seen the island roach containers. They have quite a range in roaches. Saw a Madagascar in one, but passed for $9 I think it was because the second roach looked dead. But was a very nice male with outstanding horns in there with the dead guy.
Should he like them, dubias are relatively easy to breed. (:

My pacs go nuts over hissers, they arent very fond of dubia and will spit them out somestimes but will eat them occasionally.
