Default Questions on the meaning of "lines"

Please Somebody walk me through the different "lines" of imitators and whether or not some are considered higher quality to others?!? I know there are different morphs but people will say "x" line or "y" line and I'm lost. Thank you in advance!

Default Re: Questions on the meaning of "lines"

I'll try --- but this can often get de-railed

Line refers to their - breeder- origin

Step back look at this inside-out........ look up definition of linebreeding ( one word ) That will help.

For example, some breeders 'line' breed a bloodline - of a species- in attempt to produce specific species traits.
--- opinions on "line breeding" is another whole can of worms.

Obviously we want to maximize genetic diversity. It is ok to create breeder groups from different lines.

There is plenty of objective information about this on-line.

ie line breeding would be only breeding, for example, an Understory or Stewart line only with that same Understory or Stewart line .

It starts to get complicated when there are different 'import years' of a specific species ie Oophaga pumilio "Bastimentos" ( of which there are also differ color morphs )
One will want to make the effort to keep things organized.

The very MOST IMPORT part of keeping dart frogs is to the to keep different species and different morphs of species in different enclosures ! There is a great possibility two species will breed. There is research that suggests the frog's health may even suffer as a result of mixed breeding species. This ---> creating hybrid frogs WILL end with disastrous consequences. It is (IMO) our responsibility to protect them; protect the purity and longevity of a dart frog species. They can take care of themselves in the wild ( hopefully ) , but in captivity we are responsible for them !

It's SCARY to think , that in 10-20 years from now, a D leucomela may NO longer look like a D leucomela. How sad is that !!!

Ok...... so put this in to practical terms. Lets say you want to get R variabilis "Southern" morph. You want to breed them. They WILL breed
It would be best to get ie a pair ( ie siblings) from one breeder and 2 ( ie siblings) from another breeder; or one each from these 2 breeders.
The results are likely to be mixed sexes ( from 2 different 'lines' ) where-by enhancing the genetic diversity of the offspring.

As well ---- pick a responsible breeder !!!! A breeder that can - in a second- tell you about the frogs your are buying ----- age/lineage/line and generation. We must ask!
Individuals selling PDFs must be held accountable. As well ---- responsible breeders should feel free NOT to sell to an individual that is not to care for them properly !
The outcome is a win--- win

    example:
Heatheranne and I did this last year for our 'planned' Southern variabilis groups(s)
Heath - bought 2 pair from Shawn Harrington
I bought 2 pair from John Clare ( Frog Forum founder )
We quarantined them.... foster for each other ... for over 6 months
Then we split up the pairs - in effort to promote healthy babies from 2 great breeder "lines"

I was just telling another member this: I recently was discussing the purchase of 4 leucomelas w a buyer.
I stopped him at three and ( together) we went to another vendor where he picked the 4th - same morph- from another 'line'

    Hope this helps.

Default Questions on the meaning of "lines"

That does help a lot. I certainly see that mixing morphs is taboo but the information you just gave on the line mixing is perfect. I had just seen people saying so and so line and didn't know of line mixing was taboo too but knowing it is not makes this process a lot easier. I agree that it is a shame when we alter what was made perfect in nature and look forward to purchasing my first set sooner than later! Once again thank you for the reply best info I have received since starting!!
