Default New member and sick frog :(

    Hi everyone,

new mmber here. I am hoping people may have some insight for me:

i have owned two Vietnamese mossy frogs (theloderma corticale) for almost 5 years now. Both male. Both are of good weight. Yesterday I found Oscar in th tank unable to move his back legs. I moved him to a quarantine tank immediately and left him alone for a few hours as mossys are skittish and sometimes this is a fear response (I was fixing their filter when I found him, scary stuff)
when I checked on him a couple hours later there was no change. Front legs are fine back legs are limp and drag behind him, I am wondering if this could be MBD or impaction or...?

    treatment so far:

isolation in hospital tank, in shallow bowl of water (they prefer to be semi aquatic) temps low 70 but I am increasing that slightly today he's under a grow light for plants 12 hour cycle.
ive done 2 pedialyte baths which did seem to perk him up a bit
Also done 2 lukewarm water baths, to see if impaction was the cause. He has pooped but not what I would expect from the amount he ate two nights ago.

As of this morning he can move his back toes barely but still that's a slight improvement

    heres some background info:

    age 5 ish years
sex male and he's captive bred
temp of tank low 70's (room temp, no heater)
light 12 hour cycle, just a regular fish tank lamp. Nothing fancy
food 2-3 feelings a week of crickets, dusted once a week with repcal and herptivite
Tank 18 in x18in x24in exoterra, 5in of water in the bottom with several logs, land areas protruding. Plants are just pothos filter is reptofilter
last fed two nights ago, appetite was fine and he was able to eat then. This was not a dusted meal
substrate is large aquarium gravel, which is all submerged

thoughts I have, perhaps temp is too low in my house during winter. They are said to be fine even into the 60's but maybe my guy doesn't like that. Possible vitamin and calcium powder were expired, I can't read the date anymore but it would have been for long..but maybe he's sensitive or I need to dust more often.

    any input is appreciated!!
i will post photos in a moment

Hello & welcome to ff! Sorry to hear about your sick one! I do not keep mossy frogs myself, but I'm sure someone with more experience will chime in too. But reading your description, seems like you're doing a pretty good job. My only question is in regards to calcium/mv supplements. What is your exact schedule for dusting & how often do you replace them? Also can you post a pic of him & the environment?

    Thanks!

Hello and Welcome to Frog Forum,

I don't have these , nor have I ever kept them.
I think their life span ( in captivity ) is about 5 years...or so ?
I recall reading something a while back that little is known about their life span in the wild.

Enjoy your little guy It sounds as though is has good care.

jeez thats a short lifespan if thats the case (although old age is a way better ailment than MBD or whatever else this could be!) I'll look into that, I have to confess when i bought them i assumed they're lifespans were comparable (with proper care) to the tincs and FB toads I'd kept (and still have)

Dusting cycle is 1 X per week so about every other feeding now that they're full grown. I replace them every 6 months but I supposed its possible i waited a month extra on this batch (have since replaced them)

Oscar is doing a bit better it would seem, he can now pull his legs in and twitch both toes, before his legs were just limp behind him. He's very alert and even called a bit last night to his buddy
Has anyone had a frog get injured from amplexus? his tank mate is a bit bigger than him and sometimes he tries to pretend Oscar is a female. The day i found him i had just broken them up while fixing the filter.

video seems to be easier so heres their tank:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dXLrbGFQ7xc

    and heres Oscar: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N1TVGXOuc_E

Im in the process of trying to find a vet, does anyone know of one in or around vancouver BC?

So I'm now suspecting that he has some sort of infection, it's hard to say for sure because of his mossy skin patterns by I think he's got a bit of a red ting now and he has a black spot on his side.
Oddly enough he seems to be getting stronger, I syringe fed him last night and this morning as I do think he's a bit underweight (no clue how long he's been harbouring this infection) but he's able to fight me when I pick him up which he couldn't before

-any one had a frog with similar signs?

    Well update on Oscar:
took him to king George animal hospital and had him checked, we're suspecting mal nutrition due to a greedy tank mate and a possible injury on top of that. Dr Pruss checked his reflexes etc and gave me some carnivore care food to start him on instead of the smushed up dusted crickets Id been feeding him. So at least another 2 weeks of syringe feeding by he has no signs of infection and looks like we have a good chance of making a recovery
his enegry is continuing to improve and today he started to try to climb the glass in his hospital tank

Im a newcomer myself so Hello hello all. Sorry to hear about your frog and it sounds like you know your stuff. Im glad your making some progress with his health returning. I know that in tincs and stuff hind limb paralysis is pretty commonly a sign of calcium deficiency so I wondered if that was it but it sounds like it may not have been. I have a question though. Pedialite bath? what how? Never heard of this, please explaine. It sounds like it could be useful in the future
