Help I just found my American toad like this. Still alive I think, but barely. I assume I should euthanise her, but unsure how. Is it the same as for a tree frog?
What is that white? I literally saw her an hour ago and she was fine.
Any quick advice please, I don't want to leave her like that for long

Toad passed away shortly after posting. RIP little guy
my question is, what is that white stuff? I saw him a little over an hour ago, and he looked good. There hasn't been anything lately that would suggest he was ill. The white stuff appeared in less than an hour.
i couldn't find anything online to suggest what it was. I handled everything as if it were the most contagious frog possible, but I would really like to know what it was

not an expert on toads at all, but from where the white stuff is I'd guess it was either venom from the paratoid glands or some kind of infection of those glands. Can they get infected? I really hope it's not fungal.
I know...I am really hoping it want fungal. I was really careful as if it was though. He was the only one in that tank, so nobody was in contact with him, but I do have nine other tanks in the room that I really want to keep healthy!

I'm sorry about your toad. Is there any way that you can get a necropsy done on him? It might help give you a sense of closure to find out why he died, as well as helping you to take precautions on behalf of your other animals if he had something potentially contagious.

Horrible, I'm sorry you lost your toadle I'm with Elly, it looks like he had a dump of the natural toxins in his glands... Did he lose the rest of the fluids in his body as well? I noticed his tongue was out, I think that can happen when they die, but is there any way he could have been poisoned himself? Something in the substrate? New plants that had chemical sprays or ferts? :/

I'm thinking the same thing. I had put in new plants the day before. I did what I usually do, take all the dirt off the roots, rinse in hot water, wash leaves, etc, but there must have been something on the plants that I didn't know about. It was typical plants though, pothos and some wandering jew.

That's the only thing I could really think of myself, what with some of the very pervasive pesticides they have these days. Poor guy I'm very sorry you lost him.

That white stuff coming out of the toad is their Bufo toxin. Unfortunately the toad is dead. The bufo toxin is the toads self defense system if something tries to eat it, this toxin usually only comes out if the toad is in danger but will also come out if the toad dies or if the paratoid gland somehow ruptures.
