Thread: a pair of new acquisitions in my animal room....

  1. #1

Default a pair of new acquisitions in my animal room....

i decided to start the year off with a pair of new animals. well, three actually. i added a king betta to my 30g aquarium (sorry, no pic yet) and i also added these two beauties:

    Avicularia Avicularia (Pink toed tarantula)

    it now lives here:

i also picked up a Grammostola Rosea (Chilean Rose Hair Tarantula), or the pet rock, as they are commonly called. it will get a slightly larger enclosure very soon. but nothing fancy since it doesn't require much.

i have always admired tarantulas, just took years of convincing to get my wife to say "Yes".....lol

Cool! Something I always wanted as a child, but my mother wouldn't allow one in the house.

Lasiodora parahybana(salmon pink) are really , great ive got a 5" female. Theraphosa sp. (goliath's) are harder to come by and alot pricier. T. stirmi (burgundy goliath) is the most commonly available in the US and generally WC.

You definitely need to get an Avicularia versicolor.

I want an A. Versicolor!! But I am going to wait until spring before I try getting one. Even with overnight, I still don't like having live stock shipped in winter.

And I like I said, a big one is WAY down the road. Wife's gotta get comfortable having these little ones in the house first lol

Im the same way with winter shipping, I just avoid it. Too damn cold in NY lol

I like to get them as little babies, its really great getting to watch them grow and seeing the colors develop with each molt.

Why not make a communal/multi-T setup then? That way you can increase spider count without increasing enclosures as well as your wife not noticing hahaha

You're not helping Neil!! Lol besides, I know most t's are cannobalistic, but I also know there are a few species that can be kept in groups. I think I will just stick with individuals lol

Matt, how do you keep yours? Bins?

Yupp steralite tubs are my friend lol. I use containers sold for cereal storage for arboreals. Deli cups for slings. They aren't the prettiest looking enclosures but they are effective and cheap. Also it allows me to add ventilation where I want it. Cross ventilation is very important for arboreals, especially Avicularia sp.
