Question I need a plant idea

I am looking for a broad leafed plant that will hang instead of growing upwards. Any ideas? Will be for a red eyed tree frog Viv. I have some pothos cuttings starting to root, but I'm not sold on it.

Pothos isn't made to hang, it's made to climb. When it gets to climb I've found it to be much more robust than the sad specimens forced into hanging baskets at the Home Despot.

    How big is your tank?

18x18x24 Going to be potted in the background. Planning for it to plant it near the top, doesn't have to reach all the way down.

My Reds love Pothos, but I have witnessed the same thing Brian said. Pothos planted up high and allowed to hang down almost always withers and dies on me. I have found that my reds will spend a lot of time down on the broad leaves of my Aglaonema and when they are up high they almost prefer the stable grip that sticks and vines provide. I have some pothos cuttings that have gotten long (3 to 4 ft) that I have wrapped around the sticks and vines to give them some cover options while up high.

In my opinion Lynn (FlybyFerns) has the best setup for Reds I have seen. If you can find pictures of her tanks I think that is an excellent way to go

How bout Episcia cupreata? They're my new favorite plants. They send offshoots that grow and hang but will root if it comes in contact with soil. It grows its leaves 2-3" long under bright light though. I've seen specimens in shade that grew leaves that were 4.5" long and 3" wide.

I'd suggest Cissus but they climb as well. How bout syngoniums? They climb if leaned against a wall but can grow in a prostate form.
Anthurium vittafolium also hangs dramatically. They should be trimmed though or else they'll drape to 8 feet long hahaha
Hedychium cyclindricum, the epiphytic ginger is also a welcome addition. I think it's rare anywhere in the world though.

Nepenthes sp. are also a classic hanging favorite

Thank you for the great ideas, Neil! I will do some searching and ordering today.

Paul, I have browsed through tanks galore haha. I have a million ideas going at once, but I am also trying not to "overstuff" this tank so that I can give them a maximum amount of space. When I finally get the big tank, I can put more of those ideas to work. I am definitely going to try out the moss vine though, what an amazing idea! In the tank the boys are in, they sleep mostly on the orchids and caladium. I will be moving the orchids over, but I'm not certain with the caladium yet, the boys are small, but I think the weight of the girls will probably just break it. I will still put the pothos that I'm rooting in and wind it up a very pretty branch that I got, but if it doesn't enjoy hanging, I will not even bother trying to put it in the back wall. I did buy an anthurium (not a hanging one) to put in there, it just got here yesterday.

    Thanks for the great ideas!

Haha! Oh i forgot about this neon lime green philo, i think it's called philodendron 'golden emerald'. They trail slowly and elegantly plus they look too neat to me for some reason

I love the philo!! I think that one wins! I think I've even seen that one at local stores.

If you allow a Philo or a Pothos to climb the tank, and then top it, the plant will then divert energy to the leaves left on the plant and they will grow monstrous! Just trim off any new growth you don't want and those leaves will out grow the tank pretty quick. Philodendron 'black gold' is one of my favorites.

Bill, is it easy to root the philo? I need to prune mine because it grew insanely fast and was hoping to root some for use with the greys. It seems to stand up to quite a beating! Would I root it the same as I do with my pothos?

It will root exactly the same. Pothos and philos are like kissing cousins
