Default I guess I did stuff out of order, but hi!!! I'm officially a frog owner now.

Greetings all, my name is Scott, I'm from Pennsylvania. I went out and after much debate purchased two White's tree frogs at Petco tonight, their temporary home is a 35 gallon-ish clear plastic bin with some plants (hedra helix, pothos, and some kind of native oak fern) and native moss and tree bark, so far I think they approve. I guess my only questions are do I need a heater for them immediately, or will they be fine a month or two without one until I build a real vivarium, for them? I have an excess of B lateralis roaches which they are already eating, despite only being in the bin for about 15 minutes (good lord)... I don't have a calcium supplement yet, is there any kind of supplement I can add to their water (like natural limestone perhaps) so I don't have to dust roaches? Has anyone tried this? Thanks in advance.

    Scott Bogard.

    Hello Scott,

    Welcome to Frog Forum.

I'm sorry your post got overlooked.
Hopefully you are finding your way around.
This will get you started----- this is very basic information / below:

It's absolutely essential the proper temps are maintained for them. There are lots of thermometers .
Exo-terra make a good ( closed end) one -- easily found at a pet store. ( see care sheet below)

If they are cold, they will attempt to try to control their 'own' temperature. You will see this happening when their skin color is changing ( light to dark). The skin color is affected by ( among other things) how much heat they are absorbing and/or evaporating water through their skin.

Physiologically, proper temp is extremely important for:
    -proper rate of growth
    - digestion
    -most bodily functions
( too cold , obviously slows things down )

I would removed all items found outside.
The moss especially---of which can cause an intestinal obstruction if swallowed accidentally chasing a feeder.
For now---replace with plastic items --- ones that can be rinsed with really hot tap water.
Any item returned later after QT should be decontaminated ( baking in the oven for 45 min on 250 or so)

    QT tank:
    http://www.frogforum.net/general-dis...uarantine.html

A simple QT tank is important for these frogs. Many of them are ill before they are purchased .

For QT you might get a glass aquarium with a SECURE lid. Buy the locks !
The lids are typically screen, of which can be modified with plexi or glass ( ie from an old photo frame or something from the sale bin)

They need a nice big/ low soaking dish with de-chlorinated water. Cleaned daily in hot tap water - never soap.
    ( ie ceramic planter saucer)
An amphibian safe water de-chlorinator can be purchased at a pet store----- ie Aquatize... there are others

Their - appropriate size- crickets must be dusted with calcium/Vit D and multi vitamin supplements.
You will find lots of posts here regarding sharing schedules for feeder dusting.

Hi Lynn, thank you for the reply! I'll set up a more austere quarantine tank when I get home, and I'll give them an infrared heat lamp. So I should probably mention I found a gross jelly like blob in their water dish after the first night. Both frogs seem healthy, but now I'm concerned... I didn't take a photo, but it was small and kind of clear, with a dark irregular center. About the size of a standard six sided die. Does this sound like parasites? Both frogs seem to be changing color as they move around, and they discovered how to hide from the light and are hiding there. That's unfortunate about the moss, it really does look quite nice and it is fairly well established in the tank, but I suppose I can order captive cultured moss easily enough. Thanks again!
