Thread: Live plants

    Default Live plants

I've had the whole fake plant thing going on in my White's Tree Frog vivarium for the year+ that I've had them, but I was hoping to replace them with some real plants instead, because I think it would look a whole lot better, and also help with humidity and the like.

But what plants would you suggest for them?

I've looked online but I can't seem to find anything comprehensive, most sites say 'house plants' which I know is too vague, and I'm not about to end up killing my froggies.

I know it sounds vague, but it is correct. Most tropical house plants will do well in a Viv for white's. The reason you won't find a comprehensive list is because there are literally thousands of plants that love in the same climate as the frogs do. Just remember you are going to need stout plants with heft leaves for them to hang out on, although they should already have some sturdy climbing branches already. Aglaonema species, philodendrons, pothos, sansevieria, dracaena species all do well and are easy for a beginner to care for.

Don't forget you will also need a nutrient rich substrate for the plants, unless you plan on just keeping them in their pots, in which case I would still recommending repotting them with ABG mix or something similar. If you do not bowl feed and leave crickets roam the tank, start adjusting feeding down so you only feed what the frogs will eat in a short time. Crickets roaming the tank and feeding on plants "could" become an issue if they eat a plant that is toxic and the frog eats them, but this has yet to be proven yet.

Also, don't forget that plants will require a specific lighting to flourish. Something in the 6500k range is good.

    Thank you very much!

What lighting would you suggest I use? I don't want to use the wrong one for my froggies and make them ill.

You can use whatever type lighting you prefer (cfl, flourescent, led, ect) provided the bulbs are in the 650-6700k color temp range. That's optimum for green, leafy foliage type plants. Personally, I lean towards LEDs nowadays. They have a long bulb life, use very little energy and technology has gotten to the point where they are very affordable.
