Question My questions of the day....

lol, but seriously... yet another day, and more questions. I found two new mysterious things in the viv today and figured I should get your advice/thoughts on them.

The first was on the fern, and I found some stuff like webbing/silk on it. I broke the main string before I got pics, but hopefully you can see it on the pics that I did try to get. I am assuming some sort of bug.... but harmful or not I have no idea?

The other thing was what looks like some sort of spore or something growing off the base of the red brom. I assume a fungus, but harmful? Should I do anything about either of these issues?

    Thanks as usual!

The last pic looks like little mushrooms! Those are always a welcome site.

The webbing could be a worm, small spider, or another insect. Keep an eye out for it. If it is a spider kill it and get it out of there. If it is a worm.. Kill it before it kills your fern.

I have seen him eating tiny worm like things on that fern before.... apparently there is more. I will have to see if I can find them, but the one I did happen to see was like thin as a strand of hair type thing so not easy to see.

Mushrooms are good? That's good... I like mushrooms lol. I was going to try to find a way to make fake ones, but maybe if some real ones grow in I won't have to. Is there a chance they aren't mushrooms though and more like some form of mold?

Terrarium mushrooms rock. You may end up with some the grow several inches tall and are bright white then they just fade away. All within 24 hours. So very pretty.

Did you do a bleach dip on your plants before you added them?

no, unfortunately... I hadn't done enough researching to know I should have before, and as you remember I was in a pretty big hurry.

I sat there with a light and tried to look over the fern, but didn't see anything. It's possible whatever it is might be on an underside where I can't really see, or too small to see, or even that he ate it. Or if it was a spider I guess it could be anywhere in there. I have a lot of very small webbing in my house right now.... in all my windowsills.

If fungi grows at least you know you're providing the right ground moisture and humidity :P

Thanks again for all the reassurance! The tank stays pretty consistently around 90% humidity whether I mist or not, but I usually do once or twice a day anyway.

oh and I think I figured out what was making the webs.... but no luck removing them. Once in a while I notice the same hair thin tiny worm-like things on the log and today I noticed those same webs in various places on there, and on another plant too, but not many. Hopefully he can stay on top of them and they won't kill my plants.

and today I found what I assume to be a fungus gnat.... so the silk threads are likely the fungus gnat larvae's doing. I was trying to catch it and get it out of the viv, but I lost track of it and actually think he may have just eaten it lol.
