    Question Coco fiber debate..?

    Hey y'all..

My pacman is arriving today and I have coco fiber for his setup because it was what I initially read to be good for them. My best friend then found info online saying it wasn't safe (perhaps possible impaction)??

    I found this:

Provide a substrate that is easy for the frog to burrow in. Coconut husk fiber (bed-a-beast, eco earth, forest bed, etc.) or other safe soil is a good option. Soil generally holds moisture well, allows horned frogs to dig, and looks natural.

Do not use soil that contains vermiculite, perlite, fertilizers, or other unsafe ingredients. The moisture content of the soil is important, and it should never become waterlogged or completely dry. Moist paper towels or foam rubber can be used instead of soil, but must be replaced or washed frequently. Cypress mulch, sphagnum moss, and leaf litter are other suitable substrate options, although it’s recommended that frogs kept on these substrates be fed from tweezers or tongs to prevent them from swallowing a piece of bark or moss that could cause problems.

Do not use gravel, sand, or fir bark.

..Then I also found a link about a Pacman dying from impaction of coco fiber..
PacMan Dies from coconut fiber substrate

Too much conflicting info!! I always have this problem with forums.. *sigh*

So.. what's the verdict on coco fiber?? Please advise, and thank you.

    Welcome to the forum!

Google is the least reliable source of information on a lot of things, including how to care for your frog, well may be most pet stores would take a prize of being the worst.lol

you did good, fine coco fiber is the best substrate for them, you have all the other things for your guy? Dechlorinator, small tank, decor?

i would love to see pics of the guy when you have him! And thank you for asking questions now, before you even got the frogs, it will help you potentially to avoid tons of problems
fell free to carry on asking questions!

    Thanks!

I don't know if this is the *exact* frog I'll be getting because it sounded to me like the breeder had many and I'd just get whichever one they shipped.. but this one here has some parardox spots.. which is pretty cool

    He's here!

He's the size of a quarter!

And is not the same one as the photo I posted before. Even better!!

He already got all covered in the coco fiber. How do we clean that off, just drop some water drops on him, or?

I put in a very shallow water dish and placed him inside. He seems happy, hasn't left it yet.

Also, how do you sex these little ones?

Congrats on your little one ! Now is the time to teach frog to eat from tongs. Either plastic or plastic tipped stainless steel ones are OK. Not dyed night crawlers (from Walmart or bait store) are the best food for it. Cut them with a sharp scissor from pointy end into mouth sized pieces for up to 1.5 in. and body length for bigger frogs. You will need to add supplements; more info on that i here: http://www.frogforum.net/food-feeder...schedules.html. Crickets should be same or smaller than distance between frog's eyes and gut loaded with carrots, lettuce, and cherios.

The substrate should be mixed with dechlorinated tap until it clumps in fist without dripping water out. Spot clean daily and change it once a month. More on their care in here: Frog Forum - Pacman and Horned Frogs - Ceratophrys - Care and Breeding .
Remember to take care of the enclosure and it will take care of your frog !

You do NOT want to teach your frog to eat from your hands. They are much larger than leopard geckos and everytime the frog sees your hand it will think of food and attack your hand. Plus it is unsanitary to hand feed them. Amphibians are very sensitive.

By hand-feed, I meant using tongs.. I use my hands to hold the tongs so I've always termed it hand-feeding.. sorry for the confusion.

He ate last night and once this morning! Just one little bite each time, but it's something
