My She might be a HE?!

I was fairly certain, based on things like toepads, that my frog was a girl. But then tonight I witnessed something that worried me so I looked it up.... and it's what this video describes as calling for this species (for some reason it's not what I thought it would be). My question is, can a female make this noise? or is it for sure a male calling only type thing? It's toepads are definitely not heart shaped, and quite rounded. If it is a boy I am going to have to come up with a whole new name!

I've had surprises like this before, and one ended up with countless tadpoles! Female dart frogs will generally have a more noticeable arch in their back looking almost hunched over and in general female dendrobates are much fatter with eggs when it comes to breeding. Males on the other hand will be calling (as seen by your little guy ) and will have much larger toepads and have somewhat of a small notch on them making them look as if they are heart shaped almost.

though the toepads don't seem to have that notch... at least not yet but at the same time they do seem larger like the male's, I would say the hunch picture is more like the male perhaps. Hmm.... I kind of miss that it was a girl lol. Not a big deal I suppose... either way I only have one. Good thing we had only been kicking around names thus far... but I was pretty set on Xena lol. Was still just working on the family to agree to it. Guess it's back to drawing board.

Yay he is calling. Mine never call. But all of my frogs are under a year old so I have some waiting still

but the two videos are so different... which one is actually calling? The one has that deep sound you'd assume, and the other sounds like wheezing lol.

although.. when I look at those ridges on it's back I think it looks more hunched again... ugh I don't know! This is confusing lol.

and speaking of those ridges... the other images of this species don't seem so ridgy there.

It's a he. Only males call like that

Females have a VERY pronounced arch.

The video you linked was a poor quality. The call yours did is how they sound.

Yep, if he's singing, he's a male. Calling is a sure sign of a male, despite body or toe shape. You've got yourself a boy. Congrats!

Some calls may sound similar, but vary in pitch as their throat sacks grow and mature and by the sound of resonance within the tank.

The calling in the second video sounded somewhat like Epipedobates tricolor Tincs will usually sound like a bee buzzing

Well now that we know he's a boy, and I can't in good faith name a boy Xena, we kicked around other names and decided on Zeus. According to some stuff I read, frogs in some cultures were associated with the weather, and in some personified thunder in the sky. We figured the God of Thunder himself would be a fitting name for such a striking and amazing specimen.

Unfortunately, no..... I didn't want to deal with tadpoles any time soon anyway, but my enclosure is too small for two.... technically it's kind of small for one even. But I can't upgrade it any time soon.
