Thread: Do females escape being mounted or is it a male?

Default Do females escape being mounted or is it a male?

Yesterday I got a second fire belly toad and within hours of putting it in the tank I determined that the old one was a male because it tried mounting the new one, however I never actually saw it I just heard it from my brother, today I saw the old one attempting to mount the new one again (neither one making any noise) and the new one kept trying to escape. Does this mean that the new one is a male as well or could it just be a female not wanting to be mounted?

Male frogs when being amplexed by another male frog will usually try to escape and signal to the frog that he is barking up the wrong tree. Male frogs when 'in the mood' will basically try to breed with anything, even males.. it happens lol..

Yeah - I had a male fire-belly (Almond) who kept trying to mate with my other male fire-belly (Lucius), despite Lucius's very clear signals that he wasn't interested, but I think that female toads also sometimes try to escape amplexus. Whether your new toad is male or female, though, I'd recommend keeping an eye on both toads to make sure that your first toad is actually getting the message - Almond refused to leave Lucius alone, so I tried putting a divider in their cage, but Almond figured out how to climb around the divider and I walked into the room one day to find Lucius trying to drown Almond (pushing Almond underwater with his front paws). Lucius was generally a sweet, sociable toad, but I think he got sick of Almond and eventually snapped. (At that point, I gave each of them their own cage and decided that Almond was never going to have roommates again.)

Thanks! but are you guys saying that both frogs are males or is there still the chance that the one being mounted is a female?

There is still a chance. They are just saying it isn't a clear indication of male or female.
