    Default Bd disaster

    Hi all,

my adult FBTs have tested positive for Chytrid fungus, Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis. Although I´ve kept them in a quaratine tank, I can´t say for sure that I didn´t spread this highly infectious disease to my other tanks, so I am now treating 4 adult FBTs, 23 juvenile FBTs, 24 ACFs, 5 Pipa parva, 5 ACFs, two Chinese Firebelly Newts and 4 H. azureiventris with itraconazole. Also, I had to completely take their tanks down and desinfect everything they could possibly have had contact with (work load ~ 4-6 hours daily in the last 8 days). Luckily, my frogs are still fit, but this is a very labour intensive, expensive treatment. Therefore, I really recommend quarantining (including hand desinfection!) new lifestock and having them tested during this time- this doesn´t only save a lot of money!
    Just wanted to share.

So sorry to hear, i know very well how fun it can be! But so good for you to test and get treated before it is too late!
Save one animal and it doesn't change the world, but it surely changes the world for that one animal!

Thank you, Lija! This really is no fun at all, very much work and the treatment can potentially harm my pets (itraconazole is toxic to the liver). This is why I wanted to emphasize the benefit of spending a few dollars for a Bd-test during quarantine. Still, I am very glad that my amphibians seem to be ok! Fingers crossed that they will test negatively after treatment.

Thank you, Carlos! Treatment is done for the FBTs, ADFs, Firebellied Newts and Pipa parva. I´ll continue treating my ACFs for two or three more days. Next week, I will send in the control swabs. Hope everything will be alright then
