Default What's your favorite type of moss?

    Hi all!

I was wondering what everyone's favorite type of moss to use in their vivarium is! Also, what's your favorite place to order your moss from?

Hehehe. Terrestrial would be the stuff from black jungle or rainforest junkies.

Aquatic is a toss up between rose moss and weeping moss. The only retail store I have seen that carries rose moss is the Ada store in San Francisco. Weeping moss I get from fellow hobbyists.

Moss mix though, you can't beat the mix from www.folius.net

Please clarify something for me. By moss mix, do you mean dried moss mixed together?

Yes it does. Moss is really cool like that. You can't really "kill" moss. Even if it dries out, moisture reanimates it. Scientists just recently grew 600,000 year old moss that they pulled from a glacier core sample. Amazing stuff it is.

Bill, that's insane! Is there any way for me to somehow pack it into my back wall to get it to grow? I assume that siliconing it will stop it from reviving, right?

As a matter of fact, there is. Take your favorite type of moss. It can be wet, or dry. Pop it in a blender with a lil bit of Dechlorinated water and make a slurry. Paint that slurry onto your background and as long as you keep it moist and the humidity stays up, you'll have lush moss all over in a few months.

I have fallen in love with the moss from NeHerp

(The top one on that list)

It comes preprocessed so all you need to do is place it where you like it in the tank!

Paul, that's some really nice moss! I wonder if it'll also do well if I tied it onto a large rock that will be in the water area. Thoughts?

It would do well as long as it wasn't totally submerged. Moss is hard to kill. Just keep it moist and under good lighting and it will do great!

Awesome, thanks Paul! Im going to order it as soon as I'm ready to plant (I'm still working out the water leak issues). Is this something that sells out often?
